The handgun range by work I go to at lunch has a strange policy that I just found out the other day. I have been going at lunch with a co-worker whos been trying out several pistols to decide what to buy. I've been renting too cause I'm in the market for something new. I've gone on several occasions by my self with my pistol. But when trying to rent a pistol by my self the other day I was told the range policy is a buddy system when renting (it's in writing on the waiver). Not sure why and the R.O. didn't explain. Next time I go I'll be asking. Does you local range have this rule? Why? Any ideas?

Wow, an alternative to suicide by cop. NTOT

thanks, any other ideas, though this is probably the reason...

Many ranges have that policy. The rationale is that they don't want someone renting a gun so that they can commit suicide. The feeling is that somone is less likely to kill themselves if they have a friend present. I know that you said you had brought your own pistol on other occasions, when you were alone. Again, the rationale is that if you have your own weapon, and wanted to commit suicide, you could have done it at home. Did you have your pistol with you when you tried to rent solo? If not, it might be a different story if you bring it with you next time.

I wonder if any family has tried to sue the range as being liable for providing the instrument of death. I can imagine someone trying, does anyone know if there is a case out there?

I'm sorry but I've never had the occasion to rent a hangun... what's it cheaper than a length of stout rope or something?

My local range has a similar, but more strict policy in place. You cannot rent a firearm from them unless you have a functioning firearm in your posession.

I've been a member there for over 5 years, I still have to show them a gun when I want to try something new on the wall....

And it's for the exact same purpose. No suicide rentals

yes

All of the ranges I have been to use the buddy system.

You must come with a buddy:
1) You and a friend
2) You and your firearm

I suppose it weeds out the beginners. Which is cool I suppose. I have had a few bad experiences already with noobs on the range shooting gangster style and pointing the gun in unsafe directions (including at me for a second). This was all during my first two visits to a range. I will not tolerate this again.

All of the ranges that rent guns that I know of have that policy for walk-ins. It's the best they can do to prevent someone from walking in off the street, renting a gun and doing something that affects everyone around them.

There have still been suicides with range rental guns even with the buddy policy but it prevents the people who care about having their buddy witness their suicide.

At our range, if you are a member, you can still rent guns by yourself.

it prevents the people who care about having their buddy witness their suicide.
someone once told me that suicide is the most selfish act one can do. I believe it. Because of how you feel your gonna cause pain and hurt to countless people not to mention any legalities resulting from your selfish act.:fire:

It's too bad people get to the point where they kill themselves.

I have been to the range many times and did not know of this rule or even thought about it until now

Only one range I go to has that rules, and it's conditional. If you're a regular, you can come in by yourself, rent what you'd like, and go to town. If you're not a regular, then there has to be two people. On paper, it says strictly two people...it's one of those wink-wink, nod-nod situations.

Up until I started looking at firearm forums, I never realized that people did such a thing. Seeing how it is a reality, I have no problems with that rule.

Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet

and they are why the range wont rent to 14 y.o. kids, even in groups.

The indoor range where I shoot and work part time doesn't have that policy - two people have commited suicide in the last 15 years. None recently. No big lawsuits that I know of. We also rent a full auto Uzi, so there's another potential problem. I'll mention this thread to the boss.

primersinmyshoe,
I'd be interested to hear what your boss says. This is one great example of people using their brains and protecting themselves and others without big brother nosing in.

There's been too many suicides at shooting ranges by people who show up solo and rent a weapon. They figure if you show up with a friend, then maybe you're not on a suicide mission. No ranges around here have such a policy, but it does seem to be a growing trend.

So, if your intent is to whack the guy you came to the range with, that's ok, but you just can't whack yourself?

I ran into this issue when I was on vacation, the general rule I have found at ranges here in Oregon is that the dont rent solo's guns unless you bring in your own. Its an access thing, if you COULD commite suicide with your own gun you dont need to rent one for that purpose.

Is that at the range, or Colorado as a whole?

The range. Carrying concealed in Colorado requires paying government to grant permission. Carrying openly is considered a right, although Denver, which wants to be the San Francisco of the Rocky Mountains, regards it as a crime.

So, if your intent is to whack the guy you came to the range with, that's ok, but you just can't whack yourself?
Yep, perfectly within the rules until the gun isn't pointed downrange :uhoh:. If that was the intent, why would you choose a public place full of armed witnesses?
