I am looking for a good locking handgun case that can be kept by the bed for easy access, yet is safe enough to prevent kids from opening it.

What suggestions or recommendations do you all have for me?

My suggestion is that you reconsider your requirements. You cannot prevent kids from opening anything. You can make it more difficult and time consuming.

Maybe the term prevent was not correct, but I am not looking to debate semantics.

I want something that will have reasonably quick access but that will deter friends or families children (read any age) from getting hold of it. Needless to say I'm trying to do the right thing, and want others recommendations on a brand and ballpark costs.

I have a similar situation where I am not looking to keep the determined theif out just my little brother. I went to office depot an bought a Sentry safe for 79.99 its got a digital lock and key backup. It works good enough for me. As of now its only got my M&P in it plus other goodies like extra ammo and even spent brass. I can open it real quick too. Better than the under the mattress approach.

I would suggest you look at any of the products made by V-Line. A few gun safe manufacturers (Fort Knox, AMSEC, Cannon, and others) also make similar boxes.

These types of "safes" are quick access, and use a mechanical simplex lock. This lock has been around a very long time, is very reliable, and does not need batteries.

I'm not a big fan of electronics being used in applications where reliability needs to be as close to perfect as possible. Especially when the electronics are made in China for less than $5.

For securing inside a nightstand, I'd pick this one because it's not electronic...

For securing to the floor under the bed or to the underside of the bed, I'd pick this one...

I don't like electronic. I have a feeling ten years from now, an electronic lock would stop working like my washer machine, except replacement parts would be nonexistent. Or there would be battery issues if I forgot to replace.

I have had nothing but good experience from the gunvaults I have. their is the key backup but I have only had to use it once in 10 years. 4 in the house , one each in the cars. I guess my strategy is - if I really need a gun right now I have it on me. But if not on me their is a 357 wheel gun in a safe in the room i'm in. If that were to fail :what:I go to the next closest room with a safe in it. If that one also is dead:fire: then that is an omen that I am to bring a knife or fists to this gun fight.:banghead:

I have this one:

$25 at Wal Mart.

But as pointed out prevent is a very strong word. But a lock box can't be opened accidentally.

It has a key and keypad. If you start punching random numbers it will disable the keypad for four minutes. I don't know how secure it is or how long it would take to pry the lid with a couple screwdrivers, but the kids don't show any interest in it, and that's the point.

I like this one, but haven't bought it yet...

www.titangunvault.com

I like it coz it comes w/ a lot of mounting options, you can buy extra brackets to mount it in different locations, it has a simplex lock you can open w/out looking at it, and when you open it, the gun inside is in a holster that pops out into your hand...

lol Vector, I just saw that too, that's a new link, I've not seen that video before...

I talked to the guy who makes this before, he also said I can order either a regular holster for inside the vault, or I can get one that would accomodate a weapon light if I ask for it. For one of these boxes, the application would be for my Glock 19 w/ mounted weapon light for HD, so I wanted to make sure it would fit. He also said he was making something that would attach somehow to the existing safe that would hold extra ammo, but I haven't followed up on that in awhile.

I measured it and this would fit under the passenger seat of our sedan, as one of the photos shows, and I can either mount it to the bed, floor, wall, or nightstand, or wherever.

See, I bought one of the gunvault style boxes before and brought it home, and I couldn't come up w/ any good way to mount it where it was secured, out of sight, and easily accessible at night. I didn't want it out in open sight, I wanted it either mounted to the floor under the bed, or mounted upside down under the bed, but I had a hard time reaching all the way under to the buttons when it was upside down, and once I did get it open, the door swung open into my hand and made it harder to reach around the door to get the gun out of the ceiling (now the floor) of the gun vault, and if I mounted it under the bed on the floor, then I was contorting my hand around at an odd angle to get to the top buttons, which I couldn't reach down for consistently in practiced scenarios, and then you have to reach all the way to the floor to get the gun out.

So, my feeling was the simplex style lock that has the buttons on the front door and one where the door opens to the side, would be more appropriate to mount under the bed, because the buttons are easier to reach consistently, and when the door opens, it doesn't interfere w/ your hand getting to the gun, and the titan I linked to actually brings the gun out of the case as you open the door, so that seemed even better to me, when thinking of doing this on the fly and potentially in the dark.

I currently have two of these http://www.center-of-mass.com/Store_InCarGunSafe.htm I have two large ones, one under the bed, and one under the seat of the sedan, both keyed the same. I can fit the Glock 19 w/ mounted light in 15+1 format, w/ an additional 15rd mag and an additional 33rd mag, very snug, but it fits. The other one is in the sedan, which I rarely drive, but I have it there when I need it.

Then I also have a handgun safe made by R&D Enterprises, whose website now says they're not making anything right now, but may again in the future. It was the only good simplex locking safe that fit nicely in the console of my SUV that I drive most of the time. It was almost $200, and since they already stopped making it, I spent my money on that one while I could, coz it was a must have.

When I get some more cash, I'll by one of those titan gun vaults I linked to, and put it in the bedroom, and if I like it I'll buy another one for the sedan.

My plan was to have 3 glocks in 9MM, the 19 (compact), 26 (subcompact), and then decide if I want another 19 or another 26 more, and get the third one. Then, if I have 9MM mags in each car, and in different places around the house, as long as I have one of those glocks on me, I'm not far from a loaded mag, if I don't have a reload on me, or I don't think it's gonna be enough. I keep silicone packs in them to help control moisture, and check them out periodically.

Then, I can use the other COM key lock boxes for extra ammo, or other stash places, like by the front door coat closet, or for travel, rental cars, etc.

Well, that's phase one of the plan :> of course there are other shotguns, rifles and handguns in the mix, but I haven't gotten that far yet!

Just my .02 Good luck w/ whatever you get.

Regards,

Karz

That titan gun vault is on my short list of stuff to get. Vector I, I see you're in south Florida. I'm not sure where, but American Indoor in Hallendale has one of those on display and they look pretty amazing.

Also, I have 4 little ones, and something that really helped me out with safety and kids was reading one of the moderator's website: www.corneredcat.com there's priceless information on how to approach the whole issue with your family. Good luck.

Honeywell Deluxe Security Box, model 3035D. At Big Lots for $20. it
unlocks with a 3 digit code from a
key pad on top in the front.

Sweet for $20

I have yet to get one, I do have the Cabelas "Bulletproof"
aluminum cases but the 3035D is more suited to the
bedside.
