I have an complete custom Seekins AR-pistol with two uppers: A 7" barrel and 15.5" barrel. I don't use any arm braces, and I don't use the buffer tube as a buttstock on my shoulder with either set-up. Speer Gold Dot 64 grain Ammo.
Not going to comment on practicality/weight on either set-up, but rather this is what I wanted so I got it. Both barrels are a Rock 7T.
With the short barrel set-up and a Trij optic it is a close quarter self-defense set-up.
NOT LR! Pic is with a different optic - Sightron optic
The 15.5" set-up I have used for LR out to 1100 yards prone with a Harris BR bi-pod with swivel/Notched legs/Pod-Loc and a small field bag under the grip. 69 grain Smacks/TAC/Lapua brass and a rifle scope. Yes it has a solid bottomed muzzle brake. This set-up was used this past July in a 3-day roving LR Tac match engaging 4", 5", and 10" targets out to 500 yards with bonus targets being further. This is a sub 1/2 Minute AR-Pistol. Dan, my partner used this for the Carbine targets and I used a bolt specialty pistol for the LR out to 1K with bonus targets being longer.
Dan went prairie dog shooting before the shoot this summer with this set-up to just get some trigger time in with and took a prairie dog at 640 with it.
This is the way I have chosen to "skin the cat" for distance shooting with an AR-Pistol.
Hope this answers some questions about what can be done.
