All this talk about long range shooting has me very interested.
I'm sure there are many companies with very good long range rifles out there, I just don't know about them. I'll list the ones I know of and would appreciate it if those who know can list others...
Thanks>>>

There was a .50 Cal semi-auto featured on "Future Weapons" that they shot a 10" metal plate out at 1.5 Miles. I can't remember what company manufactured that rifle but I'm hoping someone here saw that show too.

Thank you all in advance for the help finding anything I missed.

Your list of Companies making long-range rifles is decent. All make fine rifles capable of delivering the goods at extreme ranges.

But, the real problem with really long range shooting has nothing to do with the rifle used. Given that whatever you are shouldering is accurate...the problem is range determinatination and ammo consistancy, with a dose of local wind and thermal conditions thrown in.

Example: You want to hit a target at 1.5 miles. You have the ballistics of the ammo and projectile used in YOUR rifle and you enter that into a ballistic calculator. It gives you the drop of the bullet at that range. You dial the scope and make the shot....and hit? Probably not.

Reason being the variables encountered are HUGE and not easily overcome. Wind, mirage, up/down drafts to start with....barometric pressure differences due to weather, altitude and humidity have an effect on the flight of the bullet. And, you have the trigger puller who must do the deed and deliver the shot...and allow for gusting wind and all the other variables that the static weather computer cannot predict and allow for.

Long range shooting is a Science and an Art. And, an imperfect one. No one can reliably make a One Shot Kill on a 10" target at 1.5 miles in the Real World.

There ARE shooting platforms that have computerised weather data computers to take the heat/altitude/barometric pressure/angle of flight into account and make the callout of what scope adjustment is needed to lob the projectile out there and make the shot.

Keep in mind that an error in range estimation at 1.5 miles of 20 yds will make you miss the 10" target due to the drop. The bullet, even a really slick one like the 50BMG A-Max, will be coming down at around a 30+degree angle so precise ranging is critical at extreme distance.

Long range shooting IS a fascinating Science and Dicipline, but Future Weapons doesn't seem to be understanding the complexities of extreme range shooting.

I believe that the only substantiated long range shot that actually hit somebody was out of a .45-90 Sharps, by Billy Dixon at Adobe Walls. With iron sights! The distance was a hair short of a mile, measured by the US Army Engineers. Correct me if I am wrong, but that is the only one I could find.

Wasnt that the .408 Chey tac? The rifles cost 13K and I have no clue how much ammo costs

As for long range shooting there is more to it than just finding the range of the target and adjusting your scope to match. You have to be able to read the wind, also how will the temperature affect the flight of the bullet? Also are you in a rainy or dry enviroment? Altitude plays a role. Many times a rifle can shoot MOA out to 1k yards and out but the person cant. There is a whole lot more to it than pulling the trigger. Also it takes lots of practice lots of practice. You cant just go out there and start hitting targets without practice. Also if you are going to shoot at a target that is farther than 1000yds make sure that you have the range right because if you range it 25yds farther or less your going to miss.

Edit: Just noticed that Recoil Rob pretty much got it all.

The semi auto .50's featured on FW's were the Barrett M82 and the AI AS-50, other then that they were shooting bolt guns. One was the .416 Barrett and the other was the CheyTac .408.
