So I ran across an old timer that has several rifles, not necessarily collector pieces but just stashed in the closet getting dusty and a little rusty.

He doesn't want or see the need for a safe, no kids at home, retired quiet living. I mentioned some gun socks, any other ideas for long term, no shooting, no cleaning (maybe once every 5 yrs).

He mentioned hosing them down with WD-40 and I said that was bad.

Should they be treated with anything before going into the gun sock?

Thanks ahead of time.

+2 On RIG. I had a 1100 covered in RIG that sat in a safe for 7 years. I took it out to clean, and sell it, and it was perfect.

I've been wiping down my Springfield 1911 carry gun with RIG (on a RIG Rag) for the last 1 1/2 years or so, with not one spot of rust to be seen. This is a steel gun (albeit with Novak's black corrosion treatment) that is next to my body in the Texas heat for hours on end, most days of the week. I'll grant you that 1 1/2 years isn't exactly a long time, but I think that the RIG has really helped a bunch. It amounts to a new application of rust protection every time, or at least every other time, that I wear the gun - which is significantly more often than the normal cleanings after going to the range.

I've never used RIG, I do like Corrosion X a lot.

Probably any good lube/preservative would do the job. Clean thoroughly, give the metal a good wipedown with the stuff, after a bit wipe off the excess and put in the sock.
