I have a Maverivk 88 Security 12g with a 20' cylinder bore barrel and an extended tube. I would like to get a longer barrel for hunting. Does anyone have a suggestion or recomendation?

Try and find a 28" Mossberg 500 barrel or Maverick 88 barrel that takes chokes. They can usually be found for less than $100.

I suggest looking for a used barrel. For the price that some places charge for just a barrel, you can almost buy a new Maverick 88. Check around on gunbroker.com and the BST section on here. But with a 20" barrel you could also see if a local gunsmith can thread your barrel for choke tubes. It could possibly be a much cheaper solution. Unless you're duck or goose hunting I don't think you'll be at a major disadvantage with a 20" barrel and proper choke. Or you could spend the money and pick up a Maverick 88 All Purpose model.

You do not say what type of hunting, but I'll assume something in the upland like pheasant - For that, the longer barrel will help with your swing dynamics, resulting in greater success. Short barrels tend to start fast, but also tend tend top stop just as fast, resulting in misses from behind.

Even a new barrel isn't that much, and a used one is typically found very readily in pawn shops

I'd look for another good used gun with a 26-28" barrel. You can likely find something for not that much more than a 2nd barrel.

I would think about just picking up another gun with a 28" barrel and keep your 20" as it is.

I purchased one a couple years ago for $167 at Wally mart.

The security model with extended magazine will NOT accept regular Mossberg barrels, the lug is in the wrong place. It's possible to special order a 28" barrel for the extended tube, but it results in a somewhat muzzle heavy gun. Besides the special barrel cost almost as much as a new gun. I prefer to just get another gun and leave the security gun configured for security all the time and the hunting gun configured for hunting all the time. (Don't forget the magazine plug!). YMMV.

+1 on everything natman said! The extended tube Mav88's will not accept standard barrels and at the very slight cost difference you are much better off just picking up a whole new Mav88 with the standard tube dedicated for hunting. Then if you wanted to add a different barrel to THAT (like a rifled slug barrel) it would be much easier and cheaper. With the tube plugged you won't have the advantage of the greater capacity anyways, just the added useless weight to carry around.

Out of curiosity what type of hunting DO you plan to do with said gun?

ETA: Just saw this was your first post here so Welcome to the Forum!

Hey, thanks everyone for the suggestions and advice. I went goose hunting last week and realised a 20' barrel was not sufficient. I hope to go goose hunting again soon and maybe duck hunting as well. I'll probably start shopping around for another shotgun for that purpose. Thanks again for your help.
