Just picked up a pound of longshot. H110 is scarce around here ($36.99 at BPS.) Looking for mid level 357 and 44 mag loads. What has been your experience with this powder. I’ll be using cast and plated bullets.

I used longshot in my .44 SBH, 11.5gr produced 1250 with 240xtps.
I also used it for hot .45 super loads and found it very use able in that application. I never did try it in the .357 tho.

I've used it in 45 acp and 10mm. I saw better accuracy in mid to max loads than mild loads.

It's loud.

If I wanted hot rounds and couldn't get H110, I'd look for Accurate #9. Several others too. At least the load data I have indicates it's a good choice.

I like it for .357 J frame loads. I've found velocity tends to be erratic with light loads of Longshot and that it's no substitute for powders like HP38/W231. 125, 140, or 158 grain bullets loaded to near maximum pressure won't give the velocities of H110, but the recoil is a lot less. One of the reasons for substantially less recoil is Longshot has greater power density. A charge of Longshot half the mass of a charge of H110 will deliver slightly less velocity but a lot less recoil, because the mass of the powder, which is being accelerated to ~150% the velocity of the bullet, is so much less. Powders like H110, W296, H4227, Lil'Gun that have a large mass of deterrent to slow combustion come with a heavy recoil penalty. Even so, there's still no way to match the velocities that can be obtained with H110 and similar powders with Longshot or W572.

I can load up some hot rounds on 10mm, but I haven't found an accurate one yet. Makes a great plinking load for 9mm with cast PC 122 grainers, but haven't tried it in 40SW yet. Longshot is one of the best feeding powders I've ever tried.

Long shot will work, but for mid-range loads with Mag revolvers, it is hard to beat Alliant 2400 powder. Kinda of dirty, but will get you where you want to go..Bill.

2400 is more expensive than H110 near me. I buy powder locally.

I love Longshot for 357 and even 38+p. For 357 my main load is 7.5gr Longshot under a 160gr cast bullet, although the same charge gave me good results with a 158 JSP. I am planning on retesting that load for other charges just because I have acquired a variety of 357s since I first did the initial load workup. I also loaded up a few 125 hornady HPs over Longshot but I don't remember the charges.
For 44 if I remember correctly I used to load a 240 JSP over 11gr of Longshot and got decent results but it has been several years since I shot any jacketed bullets in 44.
I based my loads on the Hodgdon data so I would take a look at that and work your loads up normally, although their Longshot data for cast bullets is somewhat lacking.
