Stopped at Cabela's on my way home... last day of a $20 off $100 sale so I stopped in for some ammo and left with a gun. As usual, I took a look through the used rifle racks, and saw a couple guns that caught my eye... two Ruger Gunsite Scouts, both had the greenish laminate stock and both were in some pretty rough shape for about $750. Next to them was a Mossberg MVP Patrol in 5.56mm that caught my eye. Almost mint condition with synthetic stock for about $200 less than the Rugers.

I've been eyeballing a .223/5.56 bolt gun for practice/training for less than my .30-06 without having to stock yet ANOTHER cartridge. And since I shoot mostly 5.56 with my AR, my preference was to lean towards a bolt gun that shot 5.56 as well. As an added bonus, the Mossberg takes AR magazines too!

Needless to say, I've got a new toy. 18" barrel, 5.56mm bolt gun with an A2 flash hider that takes AR mags? What's not to love!

It's a 1-9" twist, so it should handle everything except maybe the 77 grain OTM.

Can't wait to get to the range to put some rounds through it!

Very curious myself about how accurate they are, and how well they feed some heavy bullet loads. Let us know!

FWIW, I got the Thunder Ranch model. It groups about 1 MOA, and does fine suppressed with 77 grain MK262 and Hornady 75 grain BTHP. I mounted a Horus hunter 3-12 scope on it, and I use a Gemtech HVT-QD can. Last winter I killed a nice doe with the Hornady load, 50 yards DRT. I did have some reliability issues with the mag supplied with the rifle (some cheap funky metal thing with mossberg logo). However, it works as advertised with 10 and 20 rounds Pmags.

Nice find! Awaiting range report (and photos), of your latest acquisition.

I have shot the Thunder Ranch model. With 69gr. match ammo it was about .5MOA. With 45 and 55gr. bullets it was closer to 3-5 MOA. Note that is three to five inches at 100yds and NOT .3-.5 inches. It had a nice trigger.

Good to know merrill, I'll be running a variety of ammo through it. Have some M193, M855 as well as some 69 grain OTM. Probably have some lighter stuff too that I'll have to try out to see what it likes.

In the end I'll be hand loading for it most likely but it'll be nice to have decent groups with M855 or M193 especially since I have so much of it.

Don't expect great things out of it with that M855. That stuff is "iffy" at best, not very consistent from lot to lot- for any rifle.

My MVP Predator is my favorite Tannerite scalpel. Wish they had already been selling threaded barrels when I got mine.

I have one, and 1-2 MOA seems like wishful thinking. Most of what I shoot is 55 grain, and with mine, 3-4 MOA is probably more the norm, and it doesnt seem to matter what it is.

I tried a couple of 75 grain loads, which didnt seem to do much better. Since the gun uses AR mags, it limits you to OAL's that will fit the mag, unless you load them singly.

Id be interested in hearing what you think of how the bolt cycles. Mines real "sloppy/hitchy", and not at all smooth. Sometimes it hangs up, and wont chamber the round unless you pull the bolt back a tad and push it forward again. Missed out on a couple of "doubles" on rabbits in the garden last year because of it. Not real awe inspiring. Even so, rabbits at 50-75 yards dont do real well against it. :)

Due to the mediocre accuracy and the sloppy bolt, Ive sort of lost interest in it, and really havent pursued it much lately. Kind of got waylaid on a couple of AR builds too. May give it a try again once they wear off.

My Predator

My 20" barrel MVP gave me a 1.25 inch group with 55 grain .223 Geco ammo, some German target ammo I found at the LGS.

I haven't shot it in awhile. I think I'll give it a try with some good old XM193 and see what she'll do. I'm hoping for at least 2"

Predator

Well I took the MVP to the range today and was reminded why I hadn't shot it for awhile.

It's just not reliable with 5.56. Failed to ignite 3 of 6 XM193 rounds I tried. So I switched over to .223. Goes gangbusters on any .223 I put in it.

But it is billed as a 5.56 that can use AR mags. Other than that, no real reason to buy it over another .223 gun.

So I guess I have to call Mossberg finally and see what they say, since letting it rest didn't cure its aversion to 5.56!

AK103- That doesn't sound anything like mine. I got about 2 MOA with GI M193, , and as I posted earlier much better with MK262 and Hornady 75 gr BTHPM. As far as cycling, mine only likes pmags.

Smithman- I fired GI M193, GI MK262 (77 gr OTM), and Hornady 75 gr BTHP and never had primer issues. The 193 and MK262 use US GI primers.

I've got one of the first predators to come out, shoots sub moa with fiochi 50 gr vmax. Absolutely love it.

Sad to say I still haven't been able to shoot mine. Last weekend they were running 3 gun at my range so the 100 yard rifle range was closed.

Hopefully I'll get it out this weekend.
