Looking at the Mossberg MVP Patrol rifle and wanted to hear about experiences you all have had with them.

http://www.mossberg.com/product/mvp-patrol-rifle-27716/

Getting focused on that rifle for a couple of reasons.

a) Caliber, 5.56mm
b) AR magazine compatibility
c) Factory Iron Sights
d) Factory Threaded Barrel
e) Price <$550 out the door

Normally a fan of the CZs in this type of rifle, but want something different.

Anybody have negative things to say about this rifle?

What about positive things?

Any comparable rifle out there with close to the same features?

Wanting something that is not an AR, got plenty of those projects independent of this rifle. Most shooting will be by young/new shooters at less than 250 yards suppressed. Caliber is perfect for what I want, so no need for the 7.62. Needs to be fairly rugged.

Worked with one, scoped package.
Decently accurate, bolt a little rough.

Solid stock.
Very handy length.
It'd be a good buy.

Ok, saw one yesterday. Way over priced, but I got to put hands on it. A lot smaller than I expected. Really a compact rifle. Barrel is thick. Not sure the difference between the model that has a threaded barrel and the one that has the screwed on flash hider, other than $10 in price. Action not smooth, but not rough either, seemed to lock up tight.

So anyone bought one of these?

Why not? Is there something better for the price I don't know about?

I have one. Not impressed with it and I wouldnt recommend it.

While its "accurate enough", its not what I consider accurate.

My biggest complaint is the action. Its rough and hitchy, and many times wont cycle properly. More often than I like, I have to pull the bolt back slightly and push it forward again to seat the round and close the bolt. Not real awe inspiring.

I was looking at the Ruger American at the time I got this. Couldnt find one locally to even look at it at the time. Once I did get to see one, I wasnt real impressed with them either.

If I were to do it again, Id probably go with a Savage Hog Hunter. Just wish they had a shorter barrel.

I have a mvp predator model in 5.56 nato. It has the 18" barrel no threads. I love this rifle. It's short enough to handle quickly. I also hand load and I'm shooting 65 gr Sierra game kings and my nephew has taken 3 whitetail deer with this combination and he is 9 years old. It's not for everyone but I like it and it's good for the smaller shooter

I got the Thunder Ranch 223 version- green stock, no sights, threaded muzzle. I mounted a Horus 3-12 hunter on it, and I shoot it suppressed with a Gemtech G-5. My Gemtech HALO won't mount to it due to barrel thickness at the base of the FH, but if you have a spin-on can it should be fine. Otherwise, call your can manufacturer and make sure what you have will fit. The mag mossberg gave me with it is too "clunky" to feed right, also the Brownells 20 round metal mags- but 10 and 20 round PMAGs are the ticket. My MVP does 1 MOA with 77 grain MK262 or Hornady 75 grain BTHPM. Once I got the right can and mags in it, no issues- happy with it for a $500 gun.

Buddy of mine has one. Did load development with him for it. Shoots just over 1 MOA at 100 yards with minimal load development. Used 55g soft points, not sure on the brand. Tossed a few 69 smks in there as well and it seemed to like them too. Worked maybe 30 rounds and stopped since he was happy with it and didnt want to burn any more components.

It is a 16 inch threaded barrel with sights and laminated stock. Very handy little rifle for carrying around. Light weight too. Small AR mags really keep it trim. Bolt is rough, but I think that is due to the AR mag feeding design. His rifle is no Krag, but it is smooth enough. I imagine with use it will feel a bit better, but probably never feel "good" per say. Fit and finish is good enough on his particular rifle.

I did not have any function issues at all for the 30 or so rounds I fired, and he has never said anything bad about it. If you see one for a a good price I think it is an excellent little practical rifle.

Thanks Guys,

I like the look of the Thunder Ranch edition, just not the extra 2 inches of barrel length.

Worried about the bolt issues, but maybe not enough to black ball the gun.

Probably not going to get the combo deal, and get an optic later if I decide on one.

1 +/- MOA is fine enough. Got plenty of target rifles, looking for more of an introduction gun for new shooters and something easy for a rookie to set off binary targets with.

I have enough of 62 gr. green tip, so that will be its main food for a while.

Finding it online for <$500, so with a $20 transfer I think I am getting a good price. About what I would pay for a budget AR assembly.

Thanks for the replies.

No experience with the MVP yet, but for youth I suggest the Flex Youth for it's shorter LOP and 1 pound lighter weight.

Thanks.

Should have clarified that the shooters don't necessarily mean real young kids, got some adults from Europe and non-gun friendly socialist republics inside the US that are coming in and want an introduction to shooting. I think the youngest will be 12 or 13. Most 30+, with zero experience shooting. Got some steel targets, will have some cans and stuff. I will be placing an order about 50 lbs of AN to make some binary targets out of (at the site, all applicable laws being strictly followed), so need that supersonic shock wave.

All my bolt guns are .30 or larger, so I don't want to put them off with recoil. However I do want something with a bit more punch than the assortment of .22s. Of course they will have a chance to feel some recoil if they want, M1 Garands, M1A, etc. also planning on having the .50 BMG out those days for the brave ones.

And, it's an excuse to fill a niche that I have created in my mind that I need to fill.:D

I like the idea of a bolt action that takes AR magazines but am concerned that the little tab that hangs off the bolt and pushes the cartridge forward looked flimsy. It's been a few years now, so are there any reports of this piece being a weak link and breaking?

When I saw pictures of the short carbine it looked like just the thing I'd been looking for but when I actually got to handle one I was less than impressed.
Definitely does not look like a robust design that I'd have confidence in.

I bought an MVP this spring, I sold it about 2 weeks ago. DO NOT GET ONE!
they do not feed well, at least my sample size of 1 did not feed well. even from the factory mossberg mag that came with it. I sold it after a single trip. the bolts are loose and sloppy, the mags are loose and sloppy, and on the models that come with wood stocks, the stocks are utter garbage.

I have a Mossberg MVP 308 Patrol with a Vortex Optic Crossfire II 2-7x32 BDC scope.
I picked it up for around $500.

It's accurate.
It's reliable when using Magpul PMAG LR/SR Gen M3 magazines and Checkmate Industries M14 magazines.
It's not reliable (failure to feed stoppages) when using the Mossberg LR308 magazines and ASC AR308 magazines.

Only regret... I should have waited until the Mossberg MVP 308 Scout was released.

With a Savage, that's easy. The barrel can be removed, cut down to whatever length you want (even SBR-ed ;) ), and re-threaded for a standard muzzle device ... or a can.

Did it to my all-around "Hog bolt gun," but mine started out as a model 10FP w/ an early accu-trigger, synthetic stock, and a thick heavy 24" barrel that wasn't particularly accurate for a factory "precision stick."

Now it's a handy 16.1" hunter/beater .308 that I run suppressed and that is easily minute-of-critter. Cutting down that barrel significantly reduced weight.

Well after getting to look at more than a few in different stores around town and reading the comments here and a few other places I decided to order one.

Went with the #27709
http://www.mossberg.com/product/mvp-patrol-rifle-27709/
16.25" Medium Bull, Threaded, Flash Suppressor, Tan Textured Stock and just the iron sights.

I am planning on a Vortex scope at a later date for it.

Centerfire Guns had the best price, $522 OTD (cheaper if I had gone with the black one), my FFL is another $20.

I am guessing that I should see it before Tuesday. Now to go find another $75 YHM muzzle break for it so the can will fit, good news is there is a big gun show in Houston this weekend :)

I picked upa #27729 a few months ago. Then Cabela's had a Burris MTAC 4.5x14 scope for half price so I picked that up.

Bolt is not the smoothest but it shoots less than 1 moa.

I've been kicking around the idea of picking up one of the .308 versions, just need to get my hands on one to see how it feels.

Just got an email, it has already shipped!

That was faster than I expected, was hoping for it to ship tomorrow, LOL.

UPS is saying it will be delivered tomorrow.

With quick turnaround and price saving what is not to like.

edited to add: It is out for delivery as of an email at 6:45 this morning.

A few things that can help on a rough action--

Honing raceways (Brownells has a tool that can help),
Checking the bolt surface for burrs and toolmarks and polishing them carefully. Be very careful on locking surfaces of the bolt lugs.

Rough sear engagement surfaces--ditto polish carefully and remove tool marks.

Occasionally rough interior of bolt can be a problem and it is hard to cure but large burrs can be addressed on it or the firing pin/striker.

If the bolt is parkerized, then it may be thirsty for oil. This is an easy fix. Keep applying and wiping off excess after a moment or two. Wait a day or so and do it again. Work the action in between. The rough surfaces will eventually settle in with wear.

boom boom, those are great ideas. From fiddling with it today, it seems a lot has to do with the small hinged catch on the bottom of the bolt that is required on this design to catch the rounds from the magazine. Not a normal designed bolt. We will see how it breaks in.

Picked up the rifle about noon today from my LGS. From order placed online to having my hands on it, 23 hours. Price was about $40 less than Academy (and much less than the local gun stores that had them) and saved on the 8.25% sales tax they charge. Of course, in Texas, I must now pay the state a use tax of 6.5% for items mail ordered from out of state when the seller does not collect it for them.

I also took the opportunity to pick up another Spikes 'Crusader' stripped lower while I was there. Can't have too many of those these days, right?

Love mine

Got the first model out [ sorry, too lazy to open safe to see what model ] and it has a short barrel and uses AR mag's.

I used it to a friendly competition a few times, and the other shooters were using M-4 variants.

I was able to shoot as fast ,AND much more accurately.

It is a keeper, and I would even think to take it along as a SHTF etc gun.
