I am looking for a single shot 5.56 NATO rifle. I like the H & R handy rifles but they are 223 Remington. Does anyone know of something similar to the handy rifle that will do 5.56 NATO?

Thanks

You can make a Thompson Encore chambered in anything you want. Get a frame with a trigger job, and your search will be over!

I would buy the Mossberg MVP bolt action rifle which is chambered in 5.56 and uses standard AR mags. Then I would by a single shot mag ($18) follower that rests on top of the standard mag and Boom! ..... Single Shot 5.56 rifle

are you sure the handi is actually a 223? I'd be kind of surprised if anybody is actually cutting a true 223 chamber on a mass market gun. if I was any gun maker these days I'd cut my chambers to take both. too much chance of an idiot using the wrong ammo in my gun and suing me when something goes wrong.

If you can find one, the T/C Contender is great. Had one with the Super Sixteen barrel in .223 and it was very accurate, if you could see it, you could hit it. Don't think they make that barrel anymore, tho.

I have a TC Contender in 223 and it has a better trigger, better ergonomics, and is as light as any of the H&R guns and quite accurate. Oh yeah....a carbine, that is, and I got it along with a pistol grip and 22lr match barrel, used, for $450. They are out there.

whats the problem in shooting 556 in a 223? Handy rifle at that - you know you can get those in the 60000PSI+ 454 Casulls etc...do you need the longer leade to make the accuracy worse or something?

I actually ran a few 5.56 through my 223 handi back when I had it based on that same reasoning Tundraotto. as far as I could tell it was all good, but I'm not really recommending it. I'd call NEF to be certain.

I have had two of the Handi rifles chambered in 223 Rem and fired 5.56 surplus thru them both without a problem.

I would probably just run the NEF and call it good, but if you really wanted to be sure, you could take it to a gunsmith and have him ream a 5.56 spec chamber in it.

Have you considered a Ruger 1B in .223? I have had one for over 10 years and it will handle either .223 or 5.56 NATO ammo interchangably w/o any problems whatsoever. On a good day with ammo my 1B likes will constantly give me 1/2'' 3 shot groups at 100 yds. I believe that Ruger discontinued this caliber in the number 1's, but you can still find them used. :)
