Been looking at a used GP100 Stainless in 357 mag with a 4inch barrel
the asking price is $575 is that a fair price for a used one dont know how old it is, ser starts with 170-5

I bought a new 3" stainless, fixed sights for $536 before the current panic set in. I have seen very nice used ones since, selling for $450-$500...IMO, that's a little steep

Look closely at the forcing cone. If it looks porous or cratered or has any cracks or grooves in it - walk away. Just about anything else it might need is fixable. Cock the hammer and try to push it forward without touching the trigger (with just your thumb, don't try to break it). If it falls walk away. Cycle the cylinder around slowly with the DA trigger while riding the hammer with a thumb and see if it locks on each chamber before the hammer is released. If it does you're good. That number sounds like an early gun but if it hasn't been abused those guns last forever.

That serial number puts it in 1988 production, so it's a relatively early example, but there have been very few changes over the years. You can buy a new one for that price, or less. Unless it's a half lug model and I just had to have that version, or there's something else special about it, I'd probably look for a new one.

Definitely look for a new one. I paid the same price for a new 4" SS version GP-100 last week. Around my neck of the woods they aren't difficult to find at all. They do have the tendency to go fast though. I bought a 6" version last month and I've seen 6 others in the past month.

It's a great gun. But as was already said, the price is high. See if they will negotiate after you find one for the same price new.

I changed the trigger and hammer springs and polished a few rough edges. I have a few friends who are smith guys and they really like the feel of the trigger now. A fiber optic front sight is a great addition too.

Should be able to get a brand new one for $600 + tax at the highest.

BUT, great selection on the weapon. Excellent gun.

I patronize Cabelas for reasons that aren't important other than to say I get points. They are not known for being a bargain basement retailer and I paid $647 for a brand new 4"er in November. I doubt revolver prices have changed a lot since the rush, if anything the should have dropped.

I'd pass on it unless it is in pristine condition.

(The grips were an upgrade I added later.) This one is 176-4

Where'd ya get those grips?

I agree with your choice of revolver but the price for that particular one is steep. I paid $520 for a new one about 2 weeks ago. Of course it was blued but I prefer blued pistols.

Happy hunting

Don't know if they went up due to the craziness, but I paid $525 OTD a couple years ago new. Might want to check LGS for new price first....

Prices have gone up on everything and stock is very limited. I am seeing used models sell at what were new model prices. That being said, either wait it out and see if prices come down or if you can afford it then pick it up. I would pay that for a new one but not a used one, but that is my opinion.

I snagged a used but good condition 3 inch stainless late last fall for $300 OTD at my local gun/pawn establishment.

You know, a private sale might just be worth a little more money. I might reconsider my previous post....

I paid 575 for a new 6" SS one last year. That was better than the big boxes, and in-line with a home based FFL near me. You might do better, and it seems prices vary between states and regions, but 575 for a 20 year old gun does seem steep.

PS I really enjoy my "field pistol" a lot. Loads of fun, easy with even the hot stuff. :)
