Looking for 20 ga slug gun / barrel and ammo recommendations

I haven't been paying attention or doing any shopping for a decade or so.

We shot a H&R 20 gauge single shot quite immpressively. We had the best groups with 3" Winchester 2000 fps 260 grain Partition Golds that are no longer available

We are looking for something with similar performance. Ammo and a gun.

We also do not have thousands of dollars to spend.

I did some searches, but didn't find much out. I saw a Remington 870 with a heavy pinned barrel, but not sure if its available in 20 ga.

I also don't know if a heavy barrel can be installed on a 20 gauge 870 and pinned.

I also don't know how hard it is to find another H&R.

What's available now days in slugs, barrels and slug guns

I would look at the Mossberg 500 combo gun. They come with a standard barrel with screw in chokes, and a rifled slug barrel. They can be bought new for under $400 .I have no particular slug recommendation since I had to stop hunting before the age of rifled slug barrels.

I would say an H&R Slug Hunter. Heavy barrel, known to produce good hunting accuracy and terminal performance on deer to 100 yards with the Hornady SST, but they will be pretty hard to come by. I have a 20 ga Tracker II that I load brass cases with black powder and ball that is devastating on hogs and probably 100 yards accurate, though I've never killed one with it beyond 75.

Shotguns are not precision rifles. Most basic rifled Shotguns with quality ammo will produce very effective groups for big game hunting.

People become very equipment focused which is natural but its not really that important. Lots of people chasing sub moa slug gun which a 2"-3 group at 50 yards is easily accurate enough for deer.

If I was searching for a very accurate slug id be loading my own. The LBC sabot, AQ slugs and DGS series from ballistic products all prove excellent when loaded well

Good luck finding ammo; buckshot and slugs have virtually disappeared with this panic. Personally, I would also look for a used Remington 1100

I got several shops this week looking for some spare 20 gauge accutips. No slugs. No other ammo either side from a few boxes in obscure calibers or loads.

I vote Savage 220.... If I had to get myself another slug gun today that's what it would be. It's a 20 ga. rifle. Then use whatever sabot slugs it likes best. If any can be found. They are quite scarce lately.

Any make with rifle sights will do. Doesn't have to be a rifled barrel.

The problems at the moment are finding an 18-20 inch rifle sighted barrel then finding slugs or buckshot.

Multiple barrel options for the rem 870. I purchased a Remington 18.5 shot barrel a couple years ago for my 870 20ga. Fit and finish (express) were great.

Unfortunately, midwayusa is out of stock on all of the barrels for 870 20ga.
