I have in the past owned a model 71 Berreta in .22lr- traded it away.

I would like to have another one but the cost of magazines is higher than i would prefer and it seems i only get 1 mag buying the gun on gunbroker.

Are there any other models of .22lr guns similar to the model 71 in size, capacity, etc. that are less expensive and still reliable, durable, etc.?
Thanks

Berreta NEOs or Bursa Thunder 22. Mags seem pretty reasonably priced. I just bought a magazine for a Buckmark. Got it on sale for about $12. Ruger mags are generally expensive, around $40, and you only get one with a new gun purchase. Hope that helps.

You might could find a used SMC-22 (made by FEG of Hungary, and also sold as the AP22 when it was imported by InterArms) or a Walther PPK-22. The already-mentioned Bersa is a good example, too.

The Beretta Neos is a decent gun and the magazines are relatively inexpensive and well made. It is however a much larger pistol than your Beretta Model 71 was. A Bersa Thunder .22 would be like your Beretta in size and is quite affordable at around $265 (Bud's Gun Shop). Another similar size gun would be a Ruger SR22, probably about $80 more than the Bersa. Magazines for the SR22 run about $25.

I have a Beretta 71, a Ruger SR22, a Walther P22 and a M&P22 Compact and they all fit in the same size category. The Ruger and Smith are reliable with everything, and the P22 will fire CCIs all day long. All guns would be a reasonable substitute for the 71. That said, the Beretta has a cool factor that is hard to replicate, and it’s been just as reliable as the Ruger and Smith. Good luck on your search.

I absolutely love my Bersa .22lr. has that Walther PPK classic look and has been 100 per cent reliable with quality high velosity ammo like CCI Mini Mags. First saw one years ago at my concealed carry class and everyone just loved it. Reliable and comfortable. And as it has been said the mags are very reasonable.

Forgot to mention that you could always look for a used Beretta Model 70S. Still a great medium frame size .22 that's not only totally reliable but accurate as well with just about any .22 ammo. I did find that some of the similar models to the Model 70S used the same type of magazine; were a bit longer than the original one but worked just fine.

Another vote for the Bersa if you like classically styled all metal .22 subcompact pistols that are still being made. It runs well when using hotter .22LR ammo*. You will likely have to download the magazine when new to assist feeding. Once the magazine is broken in, it'll feed 10 rounds very well.

You can class it up a bit with wood grips, if the rubber is too mundane. https://bersa.eagleimportsinc.com/bersa/shop/alternate-grips

It only comes with one magazine, though. You'll have to buy more when you can.

*NOTE: "The Thunder .22 Pistols are designed to be used with High or Hyper velocity ammunition for reliable cycling and functioning." Per - https://bersa.eagleimportsinc.com/bersa/lifestyle/target-shooting/thunder-387
