I'd like to pick up a decent semi-auto .308 rifle for under $500. Used is fine if need be.

What should I get & where to buy?

A Saiga or a cheap Cetme would be about the only choices available in your price range. The saiga is a solid rifle, should serve you well.

Trying to buy a cheap autoloader in .308 seems a bit odd to me these days. If you're going to shoot it, you'll spend more on ammo than you did on the gun in a big hurry. Even the cheapest steel cased stuff I can find (silver bear) costs me 38 cents a round, and I was quite happy to find that! The days of cheap surplus .308 are long gone.

Might I suggest that you consider a Garand from CMP, and a few cases of their Greek surplus 30-06?

Saiga would be good. I just ordered a .223 from Centerfire systems on Sunday so I hope it gets here this week.

I would rather have a Saiga than a questionable CETME. I have never heard ill of the Saigas but there are many poorly built CETMEs out there. That isn't to say one couldn't find a good one if they knew what they were looking for and had the chance to inspect it prior to buying. One could also just get lucky and get a good one.

The saiga would be the more sure and easier route.

Anyone happen to know of any NJ/PA area shops that have the Saiga in stock?
