I am looking to get a bipod for my Savage 25. I generally shoot off of a bench but would like to get into shooting prone more. None of my other rifles have bipods so I'm a little ignorant when it comes to them and how they mount. Here's a picture of the fore end of my Savage. Is there a bipod that utilizes sling studs or would I need to work around those?

a harris (and a number of other bipods) would mount right to those studs and then tighten up. harris is a good bipod for the money. the idea being that the front stud gets the bipod, and the rear can be used for a sling still. get a swivel version!

I think Maverick223 did a nice comprehensive review on bipods just a little bit ago, I'm sure he can make a recommendation

The harris is the cheap and reliable way to go. However, take a pair of pliars and close the ends of the springs, as they have a habit of un-hooking. I lost a spring on a hunt, at night, and what a drag that ended up being. It was rough duty for a cheap bipod, but had I closed the spring ends, it would have been ok.

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure I want to spend $100 on a bipod...might go with the Caldwell flavor and hope I have good results.

Hmm...maybe I ought to give the Winchester a shot then. Seems to get good results. I did see that the Caldwells get mixed reviews on Midway. Maverick seemed to be talking about the $20ish version...I was looking into the XLA product that's in the $40 range but maybe I'll pass with all the negative reviews.

I have a Harris 6-9 inch fixed and a Caldwell 9-13 inch swivel. I don't care for the swivel version as it moves around too much for me, even when I tighten it down.

You can spend a lot more than $100 on a bipod if you want to, but I agree with everyone who has recommended Harris...it may seem expensive, but in the long run, you'll be glad you bought a Harris, cause you get what you pay for.

My 2 pennies.

Had the Harris, B-Square,Shooters Ridge.
They all hook to the sling swivel stud, I have a Savage 40 Varmint Hunter, it came with the double stud like your 25.

Hook the bipod onto the stud closest to the end of the forearm then your sling to the back one , that keeps the bipod from digging into your shoulder.

The Harris was the beefier of the three, no doubt a class A product, the B- Square was just not what I liked, it didn't collapse far enough, the Shooters Ridge is a Chinese knock off of the Harris, works well ,just a little lighter made than the Harris.

Splurge and get one with the rotational head, the one you can pan with, they are a couple bucks more but a lot more user friendly, you don't have to pick up the whole rig to reset the legs when a ground hog pops up off to one side.

I won't buy anything but Harris, as I got used to them and found them to be strong, durable and dependable.

I've tried less expensive bipods and some of them get decent reviews, but I'd just stick with the Harris. It is very well built for the price.

Thanks guys. I think I might end up sticking with the Harris after doing some reading. Will definitely get one that swivels. This will give me something new to use at the range and I'm also thinking about getting into some field hunting so it could be useful there, too.

Now, if I can decide on a model.... They make so many!

Friendly, They are ok for the price point, but under heavy use, they are what you pay for. Harris is fine for the range, but under heavy use, in tough conditions, your shot depends on a 40 dollar bipod. And it let me down bad, which I blame myself for. I went cheap and it cost me. I've since fixed that. However, for range shooting, or sitting in a blind, no problem. But make sure you get a swivel, or you'll hate it.

If you are in no hurry, used ones will pop up from time to time worth the money. I bought a like new Harris the other day from the LGS for $30. Came in on a trade in gun. Figured it was worth the money even if I don't use them that often.

Great thanks viking. I'm not really in a huge hurry but want one sometime in the future...maybe in the next month or two. I'm about to move to Texas at the end of the week so I will have to browse around for a range I want to join and also find someone who will allow me to hunt on their land.

I understand and I can appreciate that, THANK YOU!

If I had a machinegun license and all the protective gear for war, I might be interested in something better. However, for my intent and purposes, the Harris is better than anything I will ever need. I have two Harris' (two different lengths which I inter-change between guns) and they have served me well for over 30 years now (I would say) without any issues.

I'm not the kind of guy who throws his gun in the back of the truck, or on the back car floor and takes it somewhere unprotected, bouncing around with my tools and stuff to go to the dump.

The way I take care of things, they will be passed on after I am long gone from here (or sold).

As you meet other shooters out and about, at ranges, etc. and get talking, you might find one that way. You would be surprised at what you can find by just asking someone, who might have something or know someone or someplace that does.

I've posted a thread about moving to Texas and have tons of range recommendations so I think that will be the easy part...I will just need to take the time and go visit them. The hunting part I think may be a little more difficult since I know some people are picky about their hunting land and I know some hunters like to either hunt by themselves or are part of the 'ol' boys club' and don't really like 'new guys'. We'll see though I'm hopeful

I too like Harris bipods, but I have a couple of friends that have used the Winchester ones from Walmart that seem to be a copy of the Winchester. They are actually Shooters Ridge bipods if my memory serves me correctly. These have always worked great for them, and get good reviews online. I've only read of a couple of negative reviews. That being said, I've found if you look around you can often find a used but like new Harris bipod for $40 which is the same price as the one at Walmart, so that's the way I've always gone.

Harris bipod with the leg notches. I've tried cheaper ones and they were a waste of money compared to the quality and rigidity in my Harris. Better to spend $60 on one than $30 and $40 and then end up with the $60.

The leg notches are awesome. They allow you to set the legs evenly and are very quick to deploy.
