Hey all i'm considering buying a bolt action rifle. Budget is around $350. I had a Remington 710 a while ago in 270 cal. but got rid of it because it didn't feel right for me..Soooo...I'll be using it mostly for coyotes at ranges from 100-300 possibly if not longer if i'm in the mood to throw some artillery at them. I got a T38 Mauser and Mosin Nagant that i could use but they are pretty shot out and don't hold groups at all. So give me some options if ya would. Savage? Rem? Win? and so on. 06? 223? 7mm? 243? and so on.. has to stay in budget.

Ford, my suggestion would be to read some of these threads and decide for yourself which one would fit you the best. Some gun shops will let you shoot different rifles so you can get a feel for different types. My .02

I would look for something used in .223 Rem if you don't plan to shoot anything larger than a coyote. It is a good round, low recoil, cheap to shoot. If you want new under 350 not including the 710, one of your only options is the Stevens 200. Basically a Savage w/o Accutrigger and a gray stock. They shoot decent from what I hear from some owners. If you can handle used, check gun shops and pawn shops for a used Reminton, Winchester, or Savage. You just might find a bargain. ;)

Welcome aboard!

A couple board favorites to consider, in the inexpensive line. You can run a search on any of these by clicking the word "Search" in the green band at the top of the forum. Use "Advanced Search" to limit yourself to the Rifle forum, or to only the titles of discussions:

Savage 110, maybe within your budget on the used rack

NEF (single shot, but many like it for varminting), well within your budget even with a decent scope

I haven't shot 'yotes myself, but I'm under the impression that lots of folks use .223 (which will certainly reach out to 300m), and the ammo is pretty affordable for that.

You've got a tight budget, but should be able to do fine with one of the above if you shop around.

Once you've run a Search on the above rifles, varminting, coyotes, etc., and read a few past threads to get the overall vibe on the subject, you can post back here with any detailed questions. The clearer the title thread, the better the quality of answers you get. Glad to see you join The High Road. Take care,

My recommendations would be between a Model 70 classic Compact and a Savage Model 11 (hunter series). However, you'd have to shop around and find one in your price range.

For coyotes to 300yds... I don't know enough about .223Remington hunting ammo to make a recommendation for it. Mostly I've always heard it was good for groundhogs. For coyotes to 300yds, I'd recommend the original .243Winchester- the real .243- which is chambered for both rifles I mentioned above. I'm thinking if you sight in for a Point Blank Zero of 300yds, you'd set it 2-4" high at 150yds and hold dead-on out to 300yds.

I'd recommend a Tikka T3. Mine in .223 stays well under 1 MOA all the time, and shoots 55-75 grain bullets great. They are available in .243 as well, and are reasonably priced.

I would recommend one of the Savage packages at WalMart or a Mossberg 100ATR. Either of these will be in your price range.

Damn you guys, only bolt-action under $350 I'd get here is cheap TOZ, cal .22LR :cuss: I envy you as hell, I'd LIKE to have a Rem 700 SPS, cal .223, that's MRSP is noted around 500 bucks by Rem, but here it would cost at least twice or even triple that.

Second that on the Tikka T3. Great gun, good price and I enjoyed the ease and smoothness of the action.

I really like my Remington VS in .223 . Out of the box with some trigger work(Remington 700 triggers are fully adjustable) I have shot ragged little groups at 100 yards. I have seen used ones for around $400. Just make sure it still has a good barrel.

Thinking of the Tikka T3, I've looked at those at the dealer I frequently do business with. I noticed the one I saw, IIRC, said "Made in Finland", but the company is owned by Beretta. That's a slick action.

Medusa, What part of Europe are you in? You're making it sound like Gunowner's Hell. There's things we can't afford in America too, FWIW.

I really can't say anything for or against the Savage package rifle deals at Wal-Mart, but something don't set right about buying a rifle that already has a scope mounted like they wanted as opposed to how I want it. At the gunshop I go to, you pick your rifle, then you pick your optics, rings, bases, etc. The only thing I don't like is I can't go in there and see about mounting aperture rear sights because they don't stock 'em. But, that's where I got my Savage M11GL in .243Winchester and the see-through mounts and the Harris bipod.

Close to hell that is, when I was getting my CZ75B, I first had to make an exam (knowledge of law), then I had to be medically examined (eyes, mental etc), then I had to wait a month (can delay up to 3 months), and all that after applying in PD, then after buying the gun (at cheap 850 USD) I had to register it. All the processes cost another 300 USD. Just one handgun.

If I'd like to have more than 1 gun then I'd have to buy a safe and keep all the guns UNLOADED with bullets in separate locked compartment (as by the law), when carrying then the chamber must be empty (autos) and gun out of sight.

El Cheapo Saiga chambered to 7.62 costs "only" 700 USD, better brands are more than that, Sauers are around 2000 USD and up.

AND if I want to buy a rifle with greater calibre than .22LR I must have a hunter's licence. .22LR rifle can be owned for sporting and hunting use and are not viable for self defence. Smoothbores are for hunting also and shotgun for home defence. And if I do want to buy rifle the all examing and applying process must be done again, even if I already have a handgun. :cuss: Walther's G22 I was once considering costs 600 USD. More than Rem 700 SPS in USA. dangit.

As Unarmed Shooter said in other topic - I must get outta here, hell I must get off this F-ing continent.

Other happy moments, once a guy saw a woman being attacked and her purse snathced, so he stepped up and confronted the BG, the BG resisted and got shot, same time a security run outside the mall (in front of what all happened) and attacked the FRIENDLY GUY and grabbed his gun hand and eventually got shot in the belly (and later admitted that he tried to help the thief). So our guy got convicted, lost his house and wife and was put into bancrupcy (as the security guy charged him) and considers suicide (the security also hurt his neck so he has some nerve damage).

Secondly, ex-gov-secretary was out hunting (drunk) and shot the other hunter (who was wearing red safety jacket), the sec saw something wobble in bushes and shot. The other guy was hit in both legs with bones smashed. Outcome? victim has no claims to the sec, investigations are shallow, no expertise on alcohol was not made and eventually the guy gets off clean.

F this, I'm outta here eventually.
