I'm mainly looking at the M&P compact and XD Subcompact. Any other suggestions? My one main caveat is that it MUST allow for a full grip (no hanging pinky). I'm open any suggestions. I'd perfer to keep it under $550.

Does anyone have a side by side comparison picture of the M&Pc and XD sub-compact (or any other semi-autos)?

I find that I shoot thinner pistols better than fatter ones so the thinner the better.

Thanks.

Take a look at the Bersa Thunder 9mm. I got one recently and it's just about the same size as my Kimber Ultra Carry II. A wee bit fatter in the grip, but the size is almost identical. Might check one out at a local gunstore.

well, that's going to depend on the size of your hands. My pinky sort of hangs off the end of my xd9 sc (well, right at the bottom) but I find the grip to be excellent nonetheless--extremely comfortable IMO

oh, a Kahr PM9 has a MUCH thinner grip, but to me that is less comfortable. Mine has been totally reliable so far, as has been the xd. The xd is MUCH easier to shoot well, however, for me.

Get a Taurus Millenium Pro PT111. In my area they are around $330 and they come with lifetime warraty. Their quality is excellent I have two, no problems at all with them, very easy to conceal, light weight and easy to shoot and strip. Their site is www.taurususa.com

I carry a S&W 3914,IWB or OWB hides real well as long as I leave the " muscle shirt" at home.anything loose hides.the 3913 would be good also.not really compact, but since they are " hideable" for me at least,I see no need for a compact. jwr

Something to consider

You might want to look at a CZ-82 in 9x18. They are only $242 shipped from AIM Surplus among others. The 9x18 Mak chambering is available in several defensive loadings like the Hornady XTP, Glasier Safety Slugs and Corbon power ball loadings.

This is a 12 round mag compact pistol that is very comfortable to shoot and accurate. It also conceals well.

And if you leave it in the car and it gets stolen, you're not out $500.

Finally, there are several inexpensive full metal jacket loadings avialble for practice - my favorite is Silver Bear, a Russian product.

If you really want to stick with 9mm NATO, then I would say that the XD Compact is the way to go. I love my standard XD and they are well under your $500 figure. Mine conceals well for it's size too. This also makes a great home defense pistol as it comes with the optic rail which for me means a Glock tactical light - which is $100 and plenty brite. A tac light is a great tool for a house gun.

9mm XD Sub-Compact

I have a 9mm XD sub-compact that I carry with me everywhere. It conceals well, (I use a Crossbreeds, IWB and have no troubles). As far as the hanging pinkie - - I bought a magazine baseplate from, "Pearce Grips", that replaces the original base plate. No more hanging pinkie.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the Kahr. I've had good success with the P9 (full length grip) and the PM9. The latter has a short grip, but you can solve that problem with a full length magazine.

Another great option is the S&W 3913 if you can find one of the pre-TSW single-stack specimens. Not as small as some of the others, but a fine gun all the same.

9x19 Makarov a new caliber...

Hoffy, yes -thanks I fixed it. :banghead:

S&W MP9C (if you use the finger extension magazine)
Glock 26 (if you put a Pearce Grip extension floorplate on the magazine)
Springfield XD subcompact
S&W 908 (actual "street" price near your target)
S&W 3913 (a new one is over your price point but you may be able to find a used one)
SIG P239 (ditto)
HK P2000SK (nice looking gun but way over your price point)

Glock 26 w/Pearce Mag Extensions or a Glock 19 would be a great choice and just a "thin" as a M&Pc or XDc.

If you really want thin, then I would suggest a Kahr K9 for reliabilities sake, or possibly a P9 if you can find one that is reliable.
