Looking for a couple of 10mm loads

Just pulled the proverbial trigger on a DW Razorback, so it's time to make some Razorback chow.

I'd like to load (1) fairly light loads for a day at the range with 165-grain plated round nose Rainiers or the like, and (2) full-bore loads for fun and the woods with 200-grain XTPs.

The handgun powders I have on the shelf right now are, to the best of my understanding, not ideal for 10mm: Bullseye, Clays, WST (my favorite), and Unique. Actually, I wouldn't mind using up the Unique if it's OK for the light target loads; I don't like the way it meters so I never use it in my .45ACP and 9mm loads.

Anyway, suggestions for both kinds of loads--preferably with powders that meter nicely in a case-activated powder drop--would be appreciated.

I've been a fan of the 10mm and managed to get one of the first Delta Elites that hit the market in the 80's. I found the best all around powder to be Blue Dot for medium and high loads with hard cast lead or jacketed bullets. Since every pistol is different I'm hesitant to give out specific loads but refer you to Hodgdons loading site at www.hodgdon.com Good loading.

Yes on the 800x for the heavy loads. I use a lot of unique for my 10mm. It works well for heavy and light loads not as good at the limit as 800x. It is always in the measure cause I load my 45, 40 and 9mm as well as revolver loads so I wind up using it on almost everything.

I don't load light stuff so I can't really help you on that one. But for some full house 10mm potential Longshot and 800X are the tickets. The Longshot will pull you up to the 1200 fps range and the 800X isn't far behind. Of the two, I don't think either one will meter well for you, but that is just one of the sacrfices one must make for performance. After all, if it meters great and doesn't perform worth a crap, all I'm loading is easy to meter crap.

If you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guarenteed, I can do that, I got extra time!

Welcome to the 10mm. I have loaded for the 10 for several years. I really like it.
I use 180 grain speer FMJ and Hornady FMJ for range time.
Equipment used is a 1010 scale, RCBS little dandy powder measure, RCBS rock chucker, RCBS dies with taper crimp.
Platform is a Colt Delta with fitted Bar-Sto Barrel. 22lb recoil, 23 mainspring.
8.7 grains of longshot(#12 rotor), 180 speer FMJ, CCI300, OAL 1.260, starline new brass, O/A 1200FPS
8.7 Power Pistol, (#13 rotor), 180 Speer JHP, CCI300, OAL 1.250, Starline new brass, O/A 1240FPS
7.5 Power Pistol, (#11 rotor), 180 fmj, CCI300, OAL 1,250, Starline new brass. Mid/low range O/A 1100FPS
I prefer to work in the 1200-1275FPS range.
WW silvertips and Hornady 180 factory loads can be used as comparisons too, as well as carry loads. Buffalo Boar loads are 1300fps (180) and well made and accurate. i dont use these that much, but are good ones. they sell a heavy load as well.
you will need to check how your powder measure throws the powder, these work for me.
I have not chrono these loads. they all function reliably in the above Colt setup and my other 1911 platforms with out changing springs.
Good luck on your 10mm, take your time and go slowly. read all the 10mm reloading data you can. Google 10mm reloading and will come up several sites.

Longshot and 800x have been my go to for 10mm.

There really isnt a need to download a 10mm, if you go light or medium on your loading you basically have an expensive 40 S&W,

800x is the fastest powder out there but is doesn't meter at all. Good for hot hand loads.

Blue Dot is my favorite for the range. It is fast and extremely loud and flashy. Great head turner at the range. only draw backs are that its dirty powder at lower levels and is only so so for metering. also good for hand loads on the top end.

Power Pistol is what I like to load bulk ammo at mid to mid-high for accuracy because it meters well, also good for .40 mid loads.

I have used all three for hard cast and all shoot great. 155 and 180 grain.

Thanks guys. I'm also hearing good things about AA#9. Any experience there?

I am thinking Universal (or Unique if I can get it to meter better) for light to medium and then ??? for medium to boomy.

I haven't loaded with AA#9 but I know it is a good powder for 10mm.

Alot of the powders for 10mm are either magnum type or are for shotgun loads. Some can be used for 10mm and 9 and 40 and 45 but you won't get the power out of the 10mm that its capable of.

Don't compare factory loads to your reloads for power or you will get short changed. but some swamp fox and then you will know where the top of the 10mm actually is.

I went ahead and picked up a pound of Power Pistol. It seems to be right there under Longshot and 800X in terms of what you can squeeze out of it, and it's also usable in my 9mm and .45ACP rounds.

That being said, I realized today that I don't have a shell plate for 10mm, so this will have to wait a few days.

I use Blue Dot and 800-X. Lots of loads for those. Hogdon website has data, Loadbooks are great for calibre specific loads. Lots and lots of data, including Hogdon and IMR and Hornady.

I also use N340, I like that one for range stuff. Really good all around powder that works in other calibres too. Viht makes good powders in general, but they don't have anything in my opinion that really compares to the 800-X or Blue Dot for full power 10mm loads.

You'll want to keep the Rainier loads low for sure. I start with the lower loads and get it to where it cycles and then up it a little to get the accuracy where I want it and they do really well that way. I use the 180's though. The heavier bullets in 10mm are very accurate at distance and have a higher BC than the lighter ones, in my experience.

PM me if you want a specific load, I have load data (Loadbook) for the powders you listed. They aren't ideal, but they will get you started and you can get some range ammo out of it.
