I am looking to add another .22 to the collection. I think this one needs to be a bolt action. I have a budget of $200 (Sept. ammo budget) Any thoughts as to whats out there. I have found some marlins and some remingtons, but would like to know what you have experience with.
Thanks guys

go with a savage mark 2 my dad bought me the gun as a kid still have it till this day goes for about 150 i think comes with a acu trigger not that mine has one. just make sure you clean it or it will jam like any other bolt action .22

I had a little savage bolt action 22, it was a great little gun, light weight and very accurate.

If you can find one, one of those Chinese Mauser 98k lookalike carbines are fun shooters. I bought one years ago and it has an excellent trigger and shoots great too.

Ruger 10/22, Wally World Special. Abot $230.00 right now, but a really nice rifle, with a longer 22" SS barrel, and a to my eye anyway, nicer looking stock, with a rubber recoil pad. I had never wanted a 10/22 until I saw the WWS.

Get the Savage or the Marlin 25. I don't know the model number on the Savge but they are accurate little rifles and can be had at Wal-Mart for what you want to pay or less. The Marlin bolt actions are also great little rifles for the price and they are also quite accurate. The Marlin may well be one of the most under rated rifles out there. They will also not bust your budget. As for the Ruger 10-22, yes they are fun little rifles for putting large quantities of ammo down range but they are not nearly as accurate as the two I have mentioned. You can also get some really great deals on military trianing rifles from time to time from the mil-surp dealers. I had a Romanian 22 with a 3 leaf leaf rear sight that I paid $9 dollars for a few years back that was incredibly accurate. It was not the exception either, they were all quite good. Check out the Marlin and the Savage at Wally world first.

CZ makes a nice little 22 bolt action, I believe it is the Model 513. I don't know what they cost though.

Good luck.

buying a gun is like buying a car you gotta try it first i mean i cant go in the gun store looking to try guns out unless i wanna fork over 10 bucks for a rental and thats a rental gun people treat them like crap and god only knows how many rounds have gone through it.

Pinstripe;

I'll also second the Savage MKII. I had one & it's a good gun for the money. I'm a tinkerer & had fun working with mine. It rewarded my efforts by becoming better looking and shooting better.

I don't know what the CZ basic is selling for now, but if you can find a CZ bolt .22 near your budget, I'd say buy it. My CZ 452 LHB American was quite a bit over your budget, but it's a helluva good gun.

I like the old Mossbergs. They are heavey and built to last. Man do they really shoot straight, my daughter can keep all shots under a quarter at 50 feet.

Sounds like your looking at used guns. I have had several of both the Remington's and Marlin's, and doubt you will go wrong with either. Plenty of both can be found under $200.

Depending on your expertiese a guy might want to take a look at some of the stickies here or over at Rimfire Central forums on buying used. Good Luck.

Spend just a hair more. Get a CZ-452 or CZ-453. They have a trainer model, which is just with a plain stock. (If you order it thru Walmart, they're like $300). You won't regret it...

IMHO, on a $200 budget you can't beat a Savage Mark II. They're quite accurate and now come with the AccuTrigger.

I have a pre-AccuTrigger Mark IIGL. Just fitted a Rifle Basix sear to it this morning. It'll be interesting to see how much easier it'll be to shoot tight groups with the lighter trigger pull.

Really if you are looking for a really nice 22 the CZ 453,452 and 513 are good. However all of those are over 200 dollars. If i were you id look at used rifles. You should be able to find some marlins which are good for under 200. The 925 model is pretty popular.

I'd suggest getting an M69 Romanian Trainer. They go maybe 80 bucks and you'll have plenty left over for extra mags and ammo. I shoot mine almost daily and it has taught me more about basic iron-sight marksmanship than any rifle I own.

I'd personally like to get a Marlin .22LR bolt action. Unfortunatly, I have never actually seen one in person. All of the Marlin bolts in this town (every pawn shop, gunstore, etc) are .22 Magnum.

But from what I see of the Magnum models, they are nice and solid feeling...

New Marlin or Savage models are within your budget. That is about it. Hint: Spend more money.

A used Mossberg would be a good. Same would apply to any of the older Remington bolt action 22's that happen to be within your budget. A fella at the show I attended bought a nice Remington pump 22. Saw a nice (old) Marlin 39A for $250. Your budget is most restricting.

Go with the Savage Mk. II G, excellent wood stock, accu triger, about $179 at a dealer, Dunhams $189 ( Syenthic stock uggh! ). Got one for my son for Crristmas 2006, Shoots about 3/4 in. at 50 yards with factory iron sights. ( I wear Trifocals ), Damn kid shoots about 1/2 inch at 50 yards.Great rifle for the cost. ( Using it on squirrels as of yesterday in northwest Ohio )

I have a Henry lever action .22. Its very plastic. I would not buy another. I have an old Mossberg. Even tho it is heavy I like it. Its an auto tho. I've shot a Winchester lever. I really liked it but new its out of your price rangenew. A used one may fit the bill if you decide to go that way. I have a Savege .17 HMR that shoots great. Im sure their .22s will too. It has the accutrigger.

your search starts and stops with the marlin, 981 series, or any of their used 80 or 81 series, they have been made continuoulsy for about 70 years now.

How is the tube-fed Marlin bolt?

I am getting a little tired of loading detachable magazines (.22s aren't very fun to load- the small size, etc. doesn't help).
