im looking to buy a smaller revolver in 38spl/357mag for leaving round in my truck for a Just in case kinda thing. Something cheap but good

Are you asking for opinions on what to get or is this a classified type post?

The perfect truck gun is an old smith model 10 or M&P. Have it parkerized and forget about it until you need it...

The perfect truck gun is a S&W Model 65.

It's stainless, so no rust problems. It will be S&W quality. It will be .357 magnum, which has had the best one shot stop ratio for years. It's a no hassle point and click interface. Fixed sights so no fragile parts to get banged around.

Way back when, I built my own truck gun.

Where did I see them, where did I see them.
Aim Surplus or Southern Ohio Gun had some Ruger Security Six revolvers available for sale at a pretty decent price.
Great choice for what you are wanting.
If I remember correctly these were stainless steel guns too.
A bonus for a truck gun in my book.

I have a Taurus 650 that works good for this and concealed carry. Maybe one of the large "K"-framed size Taurus .357 may be more suitable for something you're not going to carry with you.

S&W 65s are great for this application. There's a fair number of PDs still trading these in. You might get lucky and find one cheap.

I agree. If a .357 is a must have, then make it an old M19. The older the better...remember, youre going to get it refinished.

Please no, for the children, don't ruin an old 19. If 357 Mag is a must then a S&W M65 or 66 is the way to go. That or a Ruger Speed/Service/Security Six or GP-100. Now if that old M&P/M10/M19 is already really beat up then I guess it's ok to refinish it. But if you want parkerized why not find an old "Victory Model" M&P in 45 ACP and use that since parkerizing was the original finish on those? Just my thoughts.

Also, if just 38 is ok, www.kyimports.com has "Pre Model 10", aka M&P, S&W revolvers in "good" condition for $150. If you're thinking of parkerizing and not re-blueing then maybe consider an even tougher finish - duracoat - in the color that looks like gun blueing of course :D

Just my thoughts.

OK, I have to agree. This might be the perfect truck gun.
Remenber a truck gun will get beat up and may get stolen. So I would say whatever medium frame Smith or Ruger you can find in good shooting condition and around 150 to 175$ should be perfect.

BTW, mine is a Security Six...

EDIT: there you go...

I agree with the posts suggesting either the S&W model 10 ot the Ruger Security Six. These two guns are overlooked by many people.

You're right, the Security Six didn't even occur to me. And good used examples still turn up at gunshows within the $250 range. Stout, exceptional revolvers. CDNN was advertising some new blued ones in their most recent catalog (something about them turning up in a warehouse somewhere). GP100s can also be found from time to time used for a good price but it's been a while since I've seen them for under $300 used. Personally, I would avoid a blued revolver for this sort of application for a couple reasons: first, I tend to fall in love with blued finished S&Ws, it would end up in the house in no time flat. Second, I don't want to worry with rust, so stainless is what I'd go for unless the carbon steel gun had virtually no finish on it, then I'd have it hard chromed (this means turned a $150 gun into a $300-350 in short order).

thanks for all the help people ill be looking in to them, see what fits my price range and such i was just needing something for in case it was stolen i wont be to angry

One more gun to be sold in an alley to a BG; one more reason for me to stay away from AZ.
This may be a controversial statement. But, coming from a pro-gun owner guy like myself, it may have some merit. Their are theives out there as you know. If possible, a ccw license would seemingly be better. Just carry the gun on you, then you know where it is. It may even be faster to draw if needed rather than fumbling around a car. We just had news of a ccw holder having his gun stolen because he left it in the car to see a movie here in Michigan. Not good publicity when you try to defend your rights to defend yourself.

I have to agree. I gave the idea of a "truck gun" some thought (although, in all honesty, it was probably a way to justify another purchase).

I ended up deciding that I cannot leave a gun in my truck full time, unattended...for exactly the reasons already stated. I have no desire to arm the criminal element, nor reward them for breaking into my vehicle.

Amen. I rarely leave my gun in my car - and I dont leave anything in my car worth stealing, at least not in plain sight. Including CD's. AND I have nothing on my car which could remotely identify me as a gun owner/carrier. The only bumper sticker on the entire vehicle is a Sunoco sticker.

Keeping a low profile is a good thing

Different Kinda Truck Gun.........

Well, I guess I always had something different, in mind when I talk
about a "Truck-gun" or a Trunk-gun.
I've carried one behind the seat for years.
It's almost always an old "beater" Long-gun.
And, that's in addition to the sidearm I carry or often, if I'm not
packing on my person.

I had an old .22 Marlin for a few years. I switched it out for an old
single barrel 12ga. I carried that awhile.
I've also had an old Beater, 12ga pumpgun.
When I'm going "Cross-country", you know, state lines, I've had the
Model 94 Trapper, 357mag. behind the seat.
I think a 30/30 trapper would be a perfect "Truck-gun".

I never carried on in a rack up in the window.
It seems kinda like advertizing.
That's just an invitationto get it stolen.
And, lots of folks out there have no business with any kinda gun.

DSW seldom carries on her person but she carries a truck gun,
an old FN 9mm.
But I carry & i still like that old gun throwed behind the seat.
It just makes you feel calmer & more comfortable.
Take care........

Discretion is always the better part of valor. Rambo-ism usually only gets you grief.
I like the idea of a lever gun as a truck gun, too. Any of the pistol calibers up to .30-30 sound great. But, it needs to be a beater, nothing nice. Yet, I believe this thread started with a handgun-as-truck gun mindset.

I think little can beat a $150 S&W .38 Special for the role. With that I will BTT and leave it to you. Thanks to everyone; I apreciate everything you say.

I'll throw another option in the ring.....a Ruger SP-101. Stainless, 5 shot 357mag that is built like a bank vault. This is a smaller framed gun that can be had in either 2" or 3" barrel lengths. It is accurate and there are so many options for ammo it becomes dizzying.
The two on the bottom are the SP's
