Im on the road for the weekend and as usual I was prepacked and ready to toss bags in the truck and leave. Somehow I managed to get the guns but only a partial box of ammo for my 38. I just want cheap target loads, preferably brass cases so I can reload. Just a box or two. Is there any Walmart junk to avoid? Walmart is about the only thing where I’m at. The LGS here is kinda pricy.

Nothing wrong with Wal-Mart ammo for plinking. They usually have Winchester White Box, Federal, American Eagle (by Federal), Remington UMC and sometimes Blazer Brass too in .38 Special.

IMO buy the least expensive since it's only once and only a few boxes for plinking.
Have a safe trip.

A few days ago I saw (at WalMart) Remington 130 gr FMJ 250 round megapack for about $65. That's .26/round , or $13 per box of 50. Nothing wrong with that ammo or that price , if you ask me.

I thought that Perfecta was Czech or something. I shoot a lot of it in various calibers and have had zero problems. Avoid the steel-cased brands in revolvers. It may not want to eject.

Wal-Mart's around here quit carrying Perfecta over a year ago. I miss it. It was good ammo for a low price. I think the 130gr Remingtons are about the best deal currently at Walmart

Same here. Perfecta went away a while ago.

There are some brands of ammo I wouldn't use for semi-auto pistols, even at the range, that I would use for revolvers. Perfecta is one of them, but It's rare that I see Perfecta .38 Special ammo, even though I'm fairly sure they make it. With the number of .38 Special revolvers in the world that are being used regularly, I'm not understanding why it's so much more expensive than 9mm ammo. I frequently see 9mm ammo discounted to $11 for a box of 50, but rarely see .38 Special much less than $17 per box.

I'd suggest the OP look at reloaded ammo that's sometimes stocked at ranges or lgs'. I used to buy .38 ammo from a reloader online called Georgia Arms, but started having trouble with them a few years ago. Maybe they've improved since then.

Cheapest I found at our WM was Remingtion 100 rd boxes of UMC. Unfortunately it is +P and not great to plink with in an Airweight Smitty. For plinking and afternoon practice I found copper matrix 100grain ammo at our new Sportsmans Warehouse. VERY VERY accurate out of my Airweight and half the felt recoil. Clean frangible rounds. I may even give this style a try for self defense ammo as they have the Hornady ARX in stock as well.I doubt there is any ammo at WM that won't function well in a revolver however.

Walmart ended up being a bust. The only thing in stock was an expensive box of JHP. Not terrible for what it was, just not range fodder. A month ago I bought tires there and they messed up a tire pressure sensor, I bought the part, got reimbursed, and stood around for 2 hours so that they could take off 1 wheel, pop the bead off the rim on 1 side, replace the TPS sensor, and give me $96.80. I spent a lot of time at the gun counter. Only bright side to the day was that my cousin just happened to be there too. I hadn’t seen him in a couple years and we got to catch up. He asked about kids 22s and I talked him into skipping them and buying marlin mag fed semiautos, and using the mag as a single round loading tool.

The only "problem" with the Remington UMC 130 gr loading is it's sub-200 fpe level, which makes its recoil characteristics much different than most common defensive loadings.

Perfecta is Fiocchi ammo, which is perfectly good IME. I've compared the 9-mm (that Walmart was selling) side by side with Speer Lawman, Blazer Brass, S&B, GECO, ZQI, and Winchester. My favorite of those is GECO, my least favorite is S&B (dirty, leaves a lot of unburned powder residue). Perfecta was just as good as any of the others as far as I could determine.
