I'm looking to expand my collection here shortly. I have a S&W Sigma 40VE I plan to trade/sell. I'm kind of on the fence with what I want to go with so I was hoping for some input from fellow Highroaders.

My other guns you can see in my signature.

I've been thinking about an AR style rifle, perhaps a .22 practice rifle such as a Ruger 10/22 or something of the sort. But I also will likely need a summer carry piece as well - suggestions?

Please enlighten me with your insights and don't limit yourself to what I have listed above. Ideally, a shotgun for home defense is needed, but I'd like some insight beyond that into rifles/handguns and a valid reason to support why to help me out with my thought process.

Well, I can't imagine why you haven't had a long list of responses. Everybody loves to tell somebody else what to buy. Rather than making a suggestion, I would observe that your old bolt action shotgun probably won't feed reliably. I never owned one that would. And it is tough finding any kind of 16 ga. ammo. So you obviously need a 12ga. pump. You don't have a .22 of any kind. No shooter should be without both a .22 rifle and a .22 pistol. Beyond that, you are correct; there is no good reason to have the two .40's. Trade the Sigma for a summer carry piece. Likewise, if your go for an AR, trade the Ruger mini 14. After you have built your basic arsenal, you can duplicate and/or expand to fill the niches.

How about a S&W 642 .38 Special snubby for that summer carry piece?Or the Ruger SP 101 .38/357,a little chunkier and heavier but built like a tank.
Or for more power go with a Glock 30(9+1).45 or the thinner ,easier to conceal G 36(6+1)single stack. The .22 is a good idea as owlhoot suggests.
They're so many choices out there.Do some net research, handle the guns in the shops, shoot them if you can at rental ranges ,and make your decision.
Good luck.

S&W 642 is a "can't go wrong" summer carry gun it seems. My advice, don't buy it without Crimson Trace laser grips.

Pump shotgun: Remington 870 or Mossberg 590. NO WAY you can go wrong.

If you think you might like an AR, GET ONE. You may not be able to in the near-ish future. They're a part of history, as well as a blast to shoot.

And YES! .22LRs! Ruger 10/22 is another no-brainer "can't go wrong" gun. I'd also suggest taking a look at the Marlin 39A Golden for a little change of pace if it catches your attention.

.22 pistol-wise, I prefer Browning Buckmarks. Can't go wrong with a Ruger either.

There is a REASON these firearms are staples in the industry. Millions of Americans throughout the last 50 years can't be wrong (That's a lie).
