Looking for a Pocket Pistol

Thanks for the input, Fiv3r. That was very helpful to me.
You missed good one at last weekends Manassas Va show. Unfired R9 with box and papers for $825. It is rumored to be very reliable and surprisingly easy to shoot despite it's diminutive size and low weight. In terms of fit and finish it's in different universe from Kahr or Ruger.

I'd highly recommend a Bersa Thunder CC. I pocket carried one for over a year. Only switched because I decided to go with a 9mm (cheaper practice ammo).

That may well be true, but it's also well over twice my budget.

Thanks for the input on the Bersa almherdfan. The Bersa I held today did feel very good in the hand and so I was curious to get the input from someone who'd carried one for a while.

sarge I carried a KT pf-9 for 2 1/2 years and ran around 2000 rounds thru it and never had any problem of any kind. Only changed to kahr as they are easier to control with +P loads than the KT was with standard pressure ammo.

SMaster,

"most talked about trigger." Is that a good thing?
Do a search for +LCR +TRIGGER and there are several posts about it. What I read, when it was mentioned in the thread, was always good to great.

The LCR has one of the smoothest triggers out of the box when it comes to DAO revolvers. I would say for the price point, nothing touches it. Smoother than my Model 36's 50 year old trigger:what:

Conversely, no one is going to say nice things about the LCP's trigger. It's not really bad, it's just LOOOONNNNG. It's good for a safety measure. I get that. However, the LCR's I think is clocked in around 9-ish pounds. It's cammed so well it feels much lower. The LCP requires that trigger travel all the way to the back. You aren't going to touch one off without meaning to or being really, really stupid with a firearm.

I've been carrying a Ruger LCR .38 special for nearly a year, ennh maybe 8 or 9 months.
I love it. I use an Uncle Mike's pocket holster. It fits nicely in my Wranglers pockets, Dockers pockets or dress slacks. I think I have 125 gr. LHJHP's in it right now.Carry it around the house.

I have a .357 LCR too, but it's a little heavier, same size though. I keep it loaded with 110 gr. hp's. The recoil is not too heavy. And according to the M&S book has pretty good stopping power. I carry it when I leave the Place. It's a good enough bet, for me...... Five for Sure!

The Taurus PT145 is the same size as the CW9 except it's a little thicker. 11 rounds of .45... a little heavy, but I've carried it in my pocket. Usually use a IWB holster. BTW, the gun has been flawless in operation after the first 100 rounds.
Can usually be had for under $400.

Jazurell & CJ, you're gonna make me go out and spend some more time with my PT145. Its compactness & ergonomics has always, quite frankly, astounded me. I need to put a few hundred rounds through it to see whether it's 100% reliable. If so, I need to start carrying that thing some.

I use either a S&W 642 or a Kel-Tec PF-9 for pocket BUGs. I carry the PF-9 when I am carrying either my Glock 19 or my HK P7M8. I really like my PF-9 and have shot it a good bit, probably 2000 rounds of 9mm and another 4000 rounds of 22 rimfire with the conversion. I can count the malfunctions I have had on one hand and all were because I limp wristed the gun.

For those who say the trigger pull is too hard all I can say is 5 1/2 pounds. Nothing has been done to the trigger on mine except dry fire and range time. It is hard to see but the trigger is not only very smooth but pulls through with just 5 1/2 pounds on the scale...better than my 642.

I pocket carry my P11 all the time--Something about the secure feeling of carrying ten rounds of 9 in your pocket:).

-Cheers

Just bought the Kel-Tec P3AT at the gun collector's show in Pittsburgh on 11/12/11. On my way home, stopped at the club and put 20 rounds of Winchester white box through it. Every round cycled and fired flawlessly. It's as least as accurate as my Ruger LCP. Sights are not good on either one. You can lock the Ruger open by hand, P3AT does not lock open in any manner. P3AT was just under $280 out the door. LCP is at least $20 more anywhere you look. I have two essentially alike guns so I can shoot one a lot and save wear and tear on the other and concealed carry it. I load my own rounds in a great variety of bullets, always with Titegroup or Winchester 231.

I have a G27, and there is no way I can carry it in a pocket. (I am 6'4" and about 195lbs.) It is thick and on the heavy side for me. I have a Sig P238 that I pocket carry almost every day. If you like 1911s, you will like the P238. It is a dream to shoot. It is the favorite pistol for my 9 year old to shoot.

At the time I was shopping for a .380 my budget ruled out the Sig P.380, the 9mm EMP and seexxxxy .380 Walthers. I ended up with an LCP and have not regretted it.

It carries like a dream but even though I have small hands I think it's a bear without the grip extension. Yeah it has a loooonnngg trigger pull.

I can pocket carry a G26 in cargo shorts and cargo pants with no problem, which is the same size as a G27. If it doesn't print and scream GUN in my pocket then I have no problem carrying it that way. We put so much stuff in our pockets these days between our cell phones, wallets, keys, and what ever else you personally carry, bulging pockets don't seem to get a second look these days, unless some BG might give you a look over, and if having poofy pockets is going to make the BG think twice because it may make them think ... uhmmmm is there a gun in one of those pockets?? Then good because the BG might go pick on someone else.

On the subject of pocket pistols, I finally saw the new beretta nano today at a local gun show. It might be a beretta but I wasn't impressed with it, and most of the others that looked at it while I was there weren't either. While I was there about 9 others took a look see and out of 10 of us only 2 thought it would be their next great buy.

I wasn't able to rack the slide or feel the trigger because the dealer had the slide locked as per the show's rules, and wasn't about to unlock it for everyone that wanted to play with it, but I was able to pick it up and fondle it. He had it on display next to an LC9, PF9, and a G26.

After finally getting to see it in person and hold it, I do not think it is that much smaller in length or width then a G26 and it seemed to be the same height. It didn't feel that much lighter to me either. If you can not pocket carry a Ruger LC9 let alone a G26 then it's not going to be a pocket pistol for you.

And at $569., when I can get a G26 for $475. or a PF9 for $255. the nano is not on my short list of I got a get next ... if at all. It just came out and as far as I'm concerned, beretta or not it, it needs a couple months on the shelves to prove itself.

If you can afford the little extra to get the p238 you will love it. I have the Sig RCS 1911 for my main CC and got the P238 for pocket and BUG. Same looks, same safety and operation.

Anything that chambers a Mak was built for service use, and the guns show it. Steel, reliable as hell, built to last.

LCP - 9.5oz and 5.14"
P-64 - 22oz and 6.12"
PA-63 - 21oz and 6.9" (Alum frame)
PM Mak - 26oz and 6.3"
Bersa 380 - 20oz and 6.6"

The P-64 is offered at $150. The PA-63 around $180. They are as reliable as handguns get - 1911 reliable. And delivered on a C&R is a sweet deal.

I carry an LCP as a secondary "deep conceal" gun. It's a quality piece. I carried a PA-63 for a long time as my main carry, only selling it to a friend so he could carry it. As much as I admire the LCP, as good as it is, that PA-63 would have been the one I pulled out of my pocket if I had to.

I've had a couple of Bersa 380s. I can't shoot them without them doubling. No matter how hard I concentrate the 2nd round follows the first immediately. I think it has to do with the way it fits my hand. try before you buy.

If you are good with the 1911 controls, I'd suggest the P238. I bought mine used for $300, but I was lucky. The Colt Mustang is being produced again, so look for the older ones to drop in price, so that might be an option. for that matter, the slightly larger Colt Govt 380s fit the hands better and are usually a bit cheaper. I have seen them in your price range.
The P238 shoots so much better than any of the DAOs - LCP, P3At etc - there is no comparison. Plus the P238 has Real Sights, even night sights. And it looks good enough not to embarrass you at the barbecue ;)

If I were buying a 9mm pocket gun, the Kahr PM9 would be high on the list. But I want to look at a Kimber solo first

Just for a different opinion, FWIW... my favorite pocket-carry is a S&W 637 2.5" bbl in a Desantis Nemesis.

aegen, there are probably few people and few pockets that can pull off a G27. I have a G27 and have maybe carried a couple times in a pocket. It's just a little too big for most pockets.
