Who makes the best standard m4 carbine with removable carry handle and front sight? Colt and Stag are hard to come by right now. Are Bushmasters back to being good again? I want to be under $1000.

Colt's M-4 6920, available at your local Wal-Mart for $929 plus tax. When in doubt, go with the prancing pony.

Stag is in the midst of "stag"gering legal problems which will kill off the company, and no, Bushmasters still aren't good (although the old company, Windham Weaponry, might be worth a look).

Walmart no longer sells "black" guns or "tactical" models.

I ran into the same issue and ended up spending $949 on my Windham Weaponry MPC. Made by the old school Bushmaster guys before the Freedom Group buyout. No issues here!

Could try PSA. Their stuff seems to have a happy following.

The removable handle is inferior in every aspect to a good fixed rear sight such as Daniel Defense. Not only is it big/heavy, its also unusable as a carry handle for anyone with larger than pixie fingers.

That said, buy whatever flat top AR tickles your fancy and add whichever rear sight you like.

FN makes a nice M4 copy. They make a nice 20" too for that matter. My LGS is selling the carbine for about $1,050 I believe.

How "standard" do you want it? If you just want a fixed front sight and a flat-top you can go many routes (including getting a M&P Sport or Ruger AR556 to save some money, though they are not "standard M4" in other places).

If you want to get close to an M4 without going NFA see the other thread up right now (which basically will tell you Colt 6920).

I would have a hard time buying anything BUT a Colt right now. When you can get a Colt for $800-900 its a no-brainer.

Personally I'd wait until 6720s come back into stock at G&R and snag one for $799.

If I wanted to get as close as possible to a real M4, I'd probably start with a BCM 14.5" upper and add a permanently affixed flash hider to get it just over 16" as an option. The flash suppressor won't be exactly the same as an M4 because it has to be slightly longer to not be an NFA item. Snap that on a complete BCM lower or some other lower of your choice, add a carry handle if you still want to, and you have your rifle.

The actual "brand" on many things AR only matters in that it identifies it as a quality item or not.
