Looking for actual owner experiences with the P220

I prefer a 1911 because of the thumb safety. The P220 doesn't have one.
Actually, they do offer a model that does. Not my cup of tea, but hey, they try. :)

I have shot and owned several .45 auto's (HK, Colt, Glock & Sig). The P220 is the best in my opinion, for the money you pay for it. May not stack up against another fellows Ed Brown or Wilson Combat, but out of the box for around $550-$750...the best.

This is a must website for you Sig owners, www.grayguns.com. Bruce does fantastic work. You may also want to do some searching on www.sigforum.com

Happy New Year,

It has a tight chamber and reloads have to be tailored for it. It doesn't like anything but round nose and they have to be loaded under maximum length.

Goes to show how different people's experiences can be... I don't use my P220 to test reloads because it will shoot and function with anthing I produce. My other .45's are much more finicky - several times I have produced loads that ran beautifully in my P220 and malfunctioned badly in other guns.

I bought my 220 from a cop shop in Tucson in 1997. Arizona DPS trade-in with some blue wear and very little actual use. $389 out the door. West German manufacture. Still one of my most accurate pistols with over 3,000 rounds through it. No problems whatsoever. Wish I had kept my 225 also.

I had a very nice P220ST that I carried for about a year. It shot well and was reliable, but ended up in a trade for a 5" Wilson Combat 1911. I would recommend them to anyone though.

first handgun I ever bought . . . fed every thing I put in it, including semi-wadcutters (my first handloads when I didn't know what I was doing)

Hello. I am not a particularly strong SIG-Sauer addict but I do like the P220.

The last one I bought is the DAK version and I really do like it for a "serious" gun. If interested, some observations here:

This P220 was my first and was bought NIB in the early to mid-'90's. Other than SWC handloads, it feeds any and all ball or JHP ammo I've tried w/o fail. Accuracy is better than expected and why I purchased it in the first place.

I cannot wring any more accuracy than this out of most handguns though I honestly believe that the P220 is mechanically capable of considerably better groups than are shown here; I'm just not.

In short, I think that the P220's are darned good pistols.

Best.

To those of you who posted photos -- thanks!

Does anyone have a ring hammer on their Sig to show off? I have to admit, that's one of the things that made me buy my Cz -- I like ring hammers :) The 220 is a handsome gun, I just think that would make it complete.

Shot a buddies ST model and found myself to be pretty accurate with it, much more so than any .45 I have ever shot. With that I picked up a regular P220, but weather has not cooperated enough to test it out yet.

I really like my sig P220, it has been to hell and back with me, I even had the mag release switched around to left handed 5 years ago, when I became left handed. It digests what ever I feed it, and after 12 years it is still smooth operating and locks up tight.

I bought mine last year for 375. It was a late 80's gun. Trigger is perfect! Now I know what they mean when they say it's like glass breaking. Not pretty, but never failed, accurate, soft shooter. It'd my my next to last gun to go.

Been carrying one for the past eight years for my agency. When I first got it, I was a die hard 1911 fan and had my doubts. I have no doubts now. After thousands of rounds in training and on the pistol league, it has never let me down for any reason other than bad ammo. I can't reccommend a P220 enough. Just for the record, I'm still a die hard 1911 fan.

Bought my W. German P220 nonrail (1994 dated) folded slide with 3 mags for $449. Had some surface wear but looked hardly used inside. I carry Sigs for CCW because I like their Da/Sa decocker system to carry chambered and decocked and ready to fire by squeezing the trigger.

Day one I was shooting the lugnuts off of junk plastic wheel covers from 20' away just like that. The factory plastic grip panels made the gun feel cheap and plasticy and a set of Hogue grip panels (no finger grooves) made it feel like an extension of my hand. It feeds anything I give it, lead, jacketed, HP, plated, no hiccups.

Recoil is less than one would expect for a full power .45, less than my G21 for sure.

I advise you stick to MecGar or SIG magazines, identifiable from the "zipperback" appearance of the seam. The 7-rd and 8-rd mags are interchangeable.

I would call this the best value for an out-of-the-box .45 out there, especially the Sig CPO factory-reconditioned models.

1911's you can customize and accurize and spend three times the purchase price to get a gun as reliable and accurate as an out-of-the-box Sig P220.

Of course, you can take a 1911 farther in whatever direction you want than a P220.

Sig P220

This is probably one of my favorite guns.

I have a couple and actually use one to carry. I find it comfy in a pancake rig.

I have the 220 Combat and I like it enough to keep it. I like my 226 better and liked my USP .45 better than the 220 because I like guns with safties and a de-cock. My combat seems to be much more accurate though than the USP was. Just had more fun with the USP.
