I got the go-ahead to buy a new gun. I know some of you think that the need for a "go-ahead" is pathetic, but it was actually very easy this time and I think the wife has made great progress in accepting my only one year old obsession. Progress.

It will be a Glock 21 or 20.

A 21 is nice because I already reload the ammo and there's definitly nothing wrong with another .45, especially with five extra rounds.

A 20 is nice because I am attracted to the characteristics of the 10mm cartridge, already have a .45, and will carry this gun in the remote outdoors where dangerous animals could be encountered. BUT, I would also likely carry it in civilization from time to time, too, just because I can. I'd have to get a die set and some brass.

Thoughts?

Define "Dangerous Animals"

Southeast US Predators?
Southwest US Predators?
Northwest US Predators?
Alaska Predators?

Get the G21SF, it'll fill a better role. Plus, you already reload the ammo, therefore you'll be able to shoot more.

Have you heard about Glock 45s' kaboom issue?

Just try googling "Glock" and "kaboom" sometime, some pretty interesting stuff turns up.

If I were you, I'd pick up a Springfield XD instead.

I personally don't like non-captive recoil springs so I prefer the original XDs over the XDm's, but your mileage may vary.

(That and as far as I can tell, all the Springfield XD is, is an improved version of the Glock.)

Not a fan of the XD. Ergonomics are not good for me.

You could also google "bigfoot" and have alot of interesting stuff turn up. Doesn't necessarily mean very much.

As for the question at hand I'm pretty tempted by a g20 too, and If given a choice between the 20 and 21 I'd go with the 20. Part of me thinks its smart to have more guns in fewer calibers so I can see why another .45 would be tempting. Of course the other part of me thinks I need a gun to match every round possibly available :) . Since you reload though, you would be able to get a lot of possibilities out of the 10mm.

Why buy another Glock when you already have one and there is so much to choose from in the same price range?

My thought would be get the 20. I bought one 3 or 4 months ago I really like this gun.It is a good shooting gun I have bought a couple LW barrels for it. I already had the dies, buillets for my 40 cal. so I just had to buy some 10mm brass. It uses large pistol primers I already had plenty of too. I am currently working on some deer hunting loads.

Hewwww boy...." What didja expect him to say?

G20 is my next purchase with LW Barrels. One will be in 9x25. Will get a set of Dillon 9x25 dies and also a set of Lee dies in 10mm/.40.

I have a M&P .45, so no need for a 21.

oops - my bad I misread the OP

for your stated purpose I would go with the 10mm or look at a magnum wheelgun.

Id say the G21. 10mm sounds like it would be a hoot to shoot. If you have a 45, I'd say take the 10mm.

-Glocks have been through thousands of departments and militaries T&E
programs. What agency has even tested the XD?(besides third world Croatia?)

-XDs are made in a poor country(Croatia). Poor countries tend to cut corners
more than modern western European countries(Austria).

-XDs were only a good deal as a range gun when they were imported as
the HS2000 for around $250.

-Glocks have had problems that were brought out through extensive testing.
What unknown problems are lurking in your third world "improved Glock"?

If you already load for .40 and .45, you have the dies, bullets, primers, and lower range powder covered... all you need is the brass to load 10mm, and powder if you want to take it to the top end.

Based on your having a Colt 45 already I'd say 20/20SF for sure. I wish my 21SF was a 20SF.

It doesn't neccesarily have to be an XD. It could be a Smith and Wesson M&P. Or a Ruger SR.

The other options would be the Beretta PX4 Storm and the FNP-45. Which about rounds up the stable of modern semi-automatic handguns designed for self-defense.

Out of those the XD has the highest magazine capacity in .45ACP at 13 rounds while the others sport only 10.

Point is, Glock has Kaboom issues. Particularly with reloads as milefile mentioned he wishes to do, so I think that rules out Glock as one of his options.

Then again he also mentioned an interest in 10mm, and none of those formats support 10mm. (Although I still wouldn't suggest reloading with it, unsupported chamber and all.)

There are millions and millions... and millions of Glocks in circulation. If they had "kaboom issues", you'd hear about them blowing up a bit more often than once every now and again.

My G19 and 34 have seen about 10k reloads in the last year and a half... no kaboom yet. The 34 is at 7500 rounds, never seen a factory round of ammo, and never will.
