Looking for in production 357 or 44mag DA revolvers with barrel scope mounts

I know Ruger does on & off hunter versions of their SA revolvers that come with mounts and rings for barrel mounted scopes. Is the readhawk still offered that way?

Does S&W have anything like that currently?

I am looking to set up something like the Stalker package that JD Jones did/does. Barrel mounted scope and a sling.

I want small enough grip frame so I can do shoot DA (usually means K/L frame size grips, though N frames work fairly well with right grip).

This is just a concept I want to play with for informal pin shooting and also for pistol version of Kenyathalon (sp? it is sort of a trailwalk shoot, you have to spot targets and are penalized for misses).

I believe that S&W's scope mounts are still done by removing the rear sight assembly on the frame -- nothing is attached to the barrel.

The Redhawk is still offered with mounts and rings.

Dan Wessons don't seem to be offered with scope mounts, but it's easy enough to find one that clamps to the vent rib on the barrel shroud.

Dan Wessons use a grip stud like the GP100/Super Redhawks, you should be able to find a small enough grip to work for you even with the large frame guns.

The SuperRedHawk has mounts.

While the SRH is a *huge* gun, the grips can be swapped with anything that works on a GP100, including the small roundish-butt grip that comes factory on fixed-sight GP100s. That grip is only slightly bigger than an SP101 grip(!) so you can actually set up the SRH as "big gun, tiny grip".

For some people with small but strong hands, that might make a certain sick sense, although the cosmetic proportions of such a critter might be...well, warped .

Are there any GP models set up for scopes? I might go with a custom gun, but I wanted to play with the concept for cheap first to see if will work for me the way I want.

Mainly I want to be able to shoot heavy loads quickly in DA mode using Red dot scope, and also try long rang shooting (100 yards) with scope and SA fire.

Well it looks like the Redhawk is what I will try first.

Any suggstions for putting a sling on it? Are there any good ones that don't require gunsmithing?

Noit an answer to your question, but I believe all adjustable sight K, L, and N-framed Smiths are now drilled and tapped at the factory. Just remove the rear sight screws and there you go. You can see the screw holes in the topstrap when you open the cylinder.

S&W has occassionally made revolvers with integral weaver rails on the barrel like this 629 now available from the performance center. Colt also made a special version of the Python called the "Whitetailer" that had mounts for supplied scope rings on the barrel rib. So you have a few more choices than just Ruger's offerings - though you definately won't go wrong with the Rugers, Blackhawk Hunter, Redhawk or Super Redhawk.

I adore my Super Redhawk! Calling it ugly won't excuse you dear - overbuilt and utilitarian, yes, I can live with that - but it's beautifully built and it shoots like a dream at 100 yards!



I'm looking forward to scoping it and using a monopod at distances up to 200 yards! Say a 240gr XTP with 23.5gr of N110 and a firm crimp? I've worked up to that load with extreme care and found it works at this altitude (the range is at 10,300ft - do not try this load at sea level, or without real expertise in reloading ), giving one ragged hole groups at 100 yards. . .

So when a revolver performs like that, I get dreamy-eyed! What's not to love?

Dan Wesson has factory drilled and tapped shrouds available for both Weaver and Burris bases.

Since DW shrouds fit both old and new revolvers, you could buy a used DW and simply order the new shroud from the factory. And, of course, when you get tired of that configuration (or just need a change to a shorter or longer barrel) you can simply pull that shroud and/or barrel off, and put another on - your scope stays with the shroud.

Of course, they're accurate as all get-out and strong as the dickens...!

Hmmm. I may end up having to get the Cirillo mod like S&W24 is thinking about. Where you take N frame and have it smithed so it takes Dan Wesson barrels.
