I am looking to buy a .22 rifle to just shoot around with at the range with my six year old. I have seen the the mosseberg at walmart for 92.99 and with no scope. I have found a savage at my local gun store for 129.99 with scope and mag. I want a semi auto that uses a mag. I don't have allot to spend on this.

if you want inexpesive, the new mossberg or marlin mod 60 is fine, the mossy is actually a bit of a copy of the marlin. mossy also makes that same version in a nickel washed steel. If you want even cheaper, go to a pawn shop and find the marlin mod 60, and pay somewhere between 50 to 75 bucks, don't be afraid to haggle. As for scopes, don't get used, go to a big box store, like Walmart, and get a scope. it will be 3x9 power, make sure it is in a package that allready has the scope rings/bases. it will be 30 to 40 dollars. But before you use the scope, make sure you teach your son how to shoot and adjust, with the open sites. if you don't know how to , any range officer at any range will be glad to help you, or heck, we will tell you how to do it here! Then finally , get a cleaning kit, and a bulk pack of ammo, cci blazers, or federal, it will be about the size of a brick, that is why it is called a 'brick' of ammo! if not a brick, then get one box of every type 22lr ammo they have, and once you start using the scope, find out which one your rifle likes best. If you dont have a range bag to put this stuff in, plus some rags , tools, targets, shooting glasses , ear muffs,etc. , get the cheapest nylon or canvas one you can find, keep it under 20 bucks.
Alltogether, you can get everything you need, right from the start, for about 150 to 170 bucks. Teh most important part will be to go to a gunshop or a pawnshop, and get your rifle as cheap as you can! Like I said, 75 bucks, with tax included , should be your ceiling.

I haven't personally priced one at Wally-World, but since looking at some of the web-dealers, I'm expecting something just over $120.00 at your local big-box shopping mecca. Which is to say that I've never bought web yet. I can always get it cheaper elsewhere.

I'd try to get a feel for the Savage/Stevens 6X-series before you buy one. We used to have a few at the UT range, but everyone disliked them. I'd bought them for about $65 each, sold them to a gunshow dealer for $75, he put them on the table for $140.
I strongly advise a look at the Marlin 60. It's a tube magazine, which I find better than the detachable on many levels.
The Marlin 60 can be bought as low as $100 new at some big-box stores, and is frequently $50-75 in Texas pawnshops.
Great rifles, accurate, reliable, easy to maintain, etc. Plus you don't need to spend $15 a pop buying extra mags for them. The tube mag holds 14 or 18 rounds, depending what version you buy.

I don't have any experience with Mossberg. I own a Marlin 918T bolt action that cost $145. I have heard nothing but great reviews on the Marlin 60. I would personally go with the Marlin.

AFAIK, the 995 is a 60, just with a detachable mag.
If detachable mag is important to you, and the scope is halfway decent, I'd say that $125 for excellent condition is an average price. Not bad, but not exciting.
I just have a bias for the tubular magazines, and they cost half what the detachable ones do (due to the fact that Marlin has made over 10 million 60s, far fewer 795/995 models).
You can't go wrong buying a 22LR Marlin. Just make sure you don't buy a 22Mag accidentally, as they are not cross-compatible.

My 8 year old son has a Savage Cub single shot. It's the perfect size for him. It's small enough that he can properly shoulder and aim it. In fact, he's become quite a dead-eye with it.

For training a young kid on the principals of marksmanship, you don't want a semi-auto, even less a full size semi-auto. You want to teach him to make every shot count, not to blast lead down range in rapid succession. He needs to learn how to hit his target with his first shot. If he is ever going to hunt or even use a firearm for protection (as an adult), shot placement is critical. Also, it is easiest to notice whether or not a single shot is loaded or not. Even with a box mag, that's not too difficult. However, a tube mag could be hellish to check or unload quickly- especially for the little guy.
When I was 8, I learned on a Marlin 15YN. That's a heavier rifle, but it lasted me until I was 12 or 13 because of that. There is also the Rogue Rifles Chipmunk. They also make the gun in a laminate thumb-hole stock for kids, called the Barricuda (sp?). Savage makes a single shot bolt action with a kid sized stock. The same rifle is aslo available with an adult stock. Even the Steven 's favorite type rifles, or the H&R youth break barrel might be useable.
The rifle a kid (especially that small) and an adult would use almost need to be different for the kid to effectively shoot. Shooting a rifle that's way too big reduces accuarcy and fun. If a kid isn't enjoying his range time, then he won't want to go back.
Also, I would recommend training him on a BB gun (like a Red Ryder, or 760) before going .22.

that guns do unnecessary damage and harm when used incorrectly.
But then there is the enjoyment of target practice for the sheer pleasure of an accomplishment on your own personal level, which comes with safe gun handling.

125 for a scoped 995 ,in ss, did you say? then that is a very good price if it is stainless. normally , an ss with no scope, is 160.

a marlin 795 semi-auto 10 round clip fed blued 18 1/2" barrel with synthetic stock. mine was accurate and reliable right out of the box.
find it usually at Gander Mnt or Sportsman's Warehouse, about $120 or so. best of luck -Eric

I know the question is solved but Iwill still chime in for the Savage 64. Picked one up for $89 lightly used, with a 4-9x32 Bushnell scope already on it. 10-rd detachable mags, get at Wallyworld for $12, or here and there for less... Not the best rifle in the world but for a cheap beater to teach kids to shoot you can't beat it. You can buy 'em new at Wallyworld for about a hundred bucks.

On Thanksgiving I scanned a bunch of fliers at a friend's house and thought I saw the Savage on sale at Gander for $99, but I've already been wrong once about what I saw. I thought I saw Gander advertising a Sig 226 for $335, and it turned out to be a 225 for $385.
I definitely saw the Savage advertised somewhere for $99. If it wasn't Gander, it was either Dick's or Cabelas.
I agree that you should avoid a semi-auto for training your six-year-old. I'd go with a bolt-action. CZ makes some fine examples.
