question about .22 rifle......

For a scope, Marlin 60.

The stock is set up well for a scope. The standard 10/22 is not. WAY too much drop.

I prefer the Marlin 60, anyway. The 10/22 is a good project gun, or it's good as-is, a carbine with iron sights and low expectations, but if you want a scope, plan on replacing the stock, barrel and trigger. Getting too expensive for what it is, IMO. I've got one of each (60 and 10/22). The Marlin wears the scope. Couldn't stand it on the 10/22, and I can't see dumping hundreds of dollars into it, either.

My FAVORITE .22, though, is a Marlin Golden 39A. Heavy barrel, accurate, and fun. Points like a dream, it's a takedown, it's all-steel with cut-checkered walnut. But that's more expensive.

The first rifle I owned was a 10/22 that seemed jam resistant. That Ruger fired a variety of cheap ammo with the same reliability as more expensive rounds. In addition, aftermarket accessories allow people to "trick out" a 10/22 if they so desire.

Some years ago, I knew a gentleman who purchased a 25 round "banana" clip for his 10/22. He believed that a large number of high speed hollowpoint rounds would allow his Ruger to serve as a self-defense rifle if the need arose. The point of this story is that a 10/22 platform can serve a wide array of needs, perhaps more than any other .22 rifle.

Actually, my 10/22 needs more drop for the irons. I have to crawl the stock big time. I put a Hogue stock on it hoping for more drop, but nada, same thing. I wanna keep irons on it, though. It's the only .22 I have with irons.

I put a scope on my old Mossberg M152 when the receiver sight it came with broke off and I never found it. I priced another receiver sight for it (really liked shooting that gun with the peep) and I found one online, wanted 65 bucks for it. So, I passed, LOL. If you don't know what the 152 is, it's got the fold down part on the fore stock that makes a handle. Why, I don't know, but I thought it was cool when I was 14 and my step-father gave it to me. It's still reliable. It's about like my 10-22 for accuracy except that you put Eley match in that thing and it becomes a target rifle...:what: I'm going to try some match ammo in the 10/22 one of these days. RWS and Eley are available at a gun shop in a nearby town. It might just transform that 10/22 also, never know. Real expensive for plinkin', but hey, might be worth the cost for squirrel hunting, though I've killed plenty of squirrel with that old Mossberg before I ever heard of Eley and my weekly allowance was a dollar. It's been collecting dust for a while now. I need to take it out and shoot it.

Marlin 60, 10/22, and rem 597 are going to be what you will hear most often. Some people do not like the 10/22. If you are used to being pampered with nice guns then you probably wont either. People conclude that the trigger isn't that good and quality control isn't the highest either. However if you just like blazing away im sure it will satisfy you. The Marlin 60 is a little nicer. Its tubular mag fed and has micro groove rifling which is supposedly better. The 597 you can have the choice of 22 mag, 22 lr, and 17 hmr.

I like the Marlin 60 over the 10/22, and it can be had for $120 at the Dick's Sporting goods this week (I think). The 597 has never really been an appealing gun to me, and the 10/22 is a fine gun, but the prices are usaully higher.

I would go with the Marlin 60. I have one thats nearly 20 years old and its as good now as the day it was purchased
