Looking for possible gun information

I am looking for possible information on an old gun left to me by a family member.

A. P. SHERMAN. Engraved on top of barrel

H. ELWELL WARRANTED engraved on SIDE PLATE

38 INCH HEXAGONAL BARREL

Percussion cap

Resembles a Kentucky Long Rifle

I greatly appreciate any ideas anyone might have. A local Maryland gun dealer and collector says it might be a conversion but no one really knows.
