In about two weeks I'll be moving from the Dallas area to the Austin, Texas area. More specifically, I'll be in the Cedar Park area.

I'm not very familiar with the area yet, so if anyone knows of any good gun ranges (indoor or outdoor) that they can recommend for membership I would greatly appreciate a name, address or website for the range.

Also, if you know of any good schools (defensive handgun, etc.) in the area for moderate to advanced training I would appreciate a name, address or website for those as well.

Thanks.

Texas Tactical runs a variety of courses down towards Dripping Springs, Texas. Should be about 30-45 min from Cedar Park.

Check them out at www.texastactical.net

They also run IDPA events, 3-gun, Carbine, etc. just about every week. I've been out a few times, and it's been a great learning experience.

For outdoor ranges, I go to Austin Rifle Club, out by Manor, Texas. But that's probably close to 45 minutes drive for you.

If anyone in your party is a student at UT, there's a .22 range that's open to all students next door to the Gregory Gymn on campus. Full armory of airguns and .22LR rifles and pistols. If you know any UT students, send them our way.

Training and Ranges

I'll second Austin Rifle Club. Well worth the dues.
For training check out www.krtraining.com Everything from NRA basic to Force on Force and then some.

Cedar Park? There is a nice shooting range in Leander called Eagle Peak. $10 membership and then $10 to shoot all day. Austin also has a gunshow down off Lamar every month. Good deals on ammo if nothing else. :)

@Texfire: guess I was a bit optimistic on the distance.

FWIW: the SAXET Gunshow is up at 10601 North Lamar, third weekend of every month, $5 admission. Pretty good show overall.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I have bookmarked all of them.

I found a website for Eagle Peak in Leander and that looks very promising. Thank you "longhorngunman" for that suggestion. If nothing else their pricing is awesome @ $10 for a whole day. I pay $8 per hour at the indoor range I usually go to.

For what it's worth, Dripping Springs is also an area that we are considering moving too, so even if you didn't know it that was a good suggestion. :)

Matthew Vanitas, I don't know any students down there...and being a die hard Aggie I could never allow myself to step foot on that campus unless I'm coming to watch my Ags play. ;)

Does anyone have a website for the gun show? I searched and was unable to find one.

Any others?

I was born in Austin and raised in Cedar Park. Lived there for 20 years or so, now I'm in Round Rock, so I know the area. Lately I shoot exclusively at Red's Gun Range in Pflugerville, about a 5 min drive from Round Rock and probably 25 minutes from Cedar Park. They have a 100 yd rifle range and 25 yd pistol range, all indoors. Here's the website:

They're about $12 an hr, which is a little high, but it's so close to the house for me it is worth it.

I have never attended any of the schools mentioned, but I have heard that Texas Tactical is good. I have friends that shoot at Eagle Peak and they seem to like it. If you want to shoot skeet/clays, go to Capitol City Trap and Skeet on the east side of Austin:

Like the others said, there's a gunshow the 3rd weekend of every month in Austin. I try to make it more times than not, if nothing else than to pick up some cheap ammo and get a laugh at the overpriced butchered milsurps that I see every single show at the same tables. There are a few good deals though every now and then so you may want to check it out. Welcome to the area.
