Let me caveat this post by stating that my rifle experience has been limited to AR, AK, Mosin Nagant, & various 22LR rifles. All 50 yards with iron sights or red-dots (some glass with 22's).

I would like to start shooting longer distances but don't want to spend a fortune because I may not enjoy the sport. I've researched and have come down to 4 rifles in 30-06

- Marlin XL7
- Remington 710
- Savage Axis
- Savage 110 (Trophy Hunter or GXP3)

Thoughts?

Of those, the Savage 110 because of the better availability of aftermarket products like stocks, barrels, triggers, ect.

Last year i purchased the Marlin XL7 and have been very pleased, Savage Axis package with scope mounted and bore sighted was also great deal. Was not impressed with the low end Remington's. The two reasons i chose the XL7 were the laminate stock and the trigger, the fluted bolt was also nice. The 06 has some pop and the recoil in a light rifle is felt more. I topped it off with a Simmons 44 mag scope from Natchez and kept it under $450.- not including tax and DROS.

I picked up a used Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather SS at a gun show. The seller had no idea it was anything more than a standard Model 70 so I practically got the thing for nothing. The stock has a light scratch, but other than that, it's LNIB.

Sorry to get away from the rifles on your list, but my point is maybe troll the pawn shops for something used. In my case, whoever had the rifle new took excellent care of it. I often wonder what led the guy to sell it. Either way, I won't part with it anytime soon. great caliber.

So many great used rifles in 30-06 available that I would not buy new. Look around for something that someone else has dumped a ton of money into. That way you won't take a hit on resale.

Savage of the ones you listed, for sure. But don't buy one of the package rifles, the scopes are trash. Last one I had lasted exactly 3 shots before the objective lens went downrange.

For instance, I picked up a Savage 110 last week off a local gun listing website for $200 face to face to give as a gift to my father in law. It was one of the older Savages with the LONG action. The stock had been refinished (not the prettiest job in the world, but it will do). It had a cheap scope on it. I replaced the rings with some off-set rings and put a scope on it that I had in a drawer. Got him a solid first rifle for about $230 when it was all said and done. I know he'll be thrilled and have something capable of hunting anything in N.A.

30-06

Onward Allusion: I have several Savages. Most bought used everyone of them shoots just great. I have two Savage 110`s in 30-06 with the black factory composit stocks on both of them. I was going to buy better stocks for them but the way they both shoot both 1 in or better at a 100 yds I decided not to. I shoot every thing from 110 gr V-MAX`S to 220 gr REM factory loads. I have never seen a SAVAGE that would`t shoot. A SAVAGE 110 in a 30-06 would be hard to beat and with it you can hunt just about anything in NORTH AMERICA with it. GOOD LUCK TO YOU: ken

What herkyguy said. I was in Bud's a month or so ago. He had a used Stevens rifle(can't remember the model #) in .30-06. It came with Leoupolld rings and a Redfield 4X12 scope. Looked brand new and was $270.00. If you can wait until December, there should be lots of good, used rifles for sale.

Good advice from everyone. I think I will go with the Savage 110. I will also wait until Dec. Pretty sure there won't be a run on 'em regardless of who gets into office. ;)

Savage 110 by far.

For the guy that said,
Savage or H&R..............
I truly hope you are joking. He said he wanted to get into long range shooting. The Savage I can agree with, but most H&R's aren't accurate at 100 yards, much less at longer ranges.

Get a Used Savage 308

First buy a Best scope you can afford.

Next, skip a few beer runs and use the beer money for a Choate varmint stock

When you are really happy shooting the 308 at 800 meters

then buy a 260 Remington target barrel for it and start shooting out to 1000 meters.

It is a process,

Get the Savage

Another vote for the Savage

I would only get a Remington 710 if it was given to me free, and, maybe not even then. I've read you need to put at least 100 rounds though the 710 before the "self lubricating bolt" ??? smooths out. Even with Wally World ammo that is at least $100 with tax included.

How about an old commercial mauser. I know its not on your list, but the can be found in almost any pawn shop and used gun rack for around $3-400 often times with an older but still very useable scope still installed. The are oftentimes found in 30-'06. Examples can be found dating from the '40's all the way through the early eighties. They hold their value well and almost without exception built better than anything made today.

I've never owned a Savage, but my brother was having trouble sighting in his that he got as a package (with scope) from Bass Pro Shop or somewhere. After figuring out that one of the scope mount rings was loose, it was punching 4 leaf clovers at 100 yds. Amazing accuracy out of the box.

I still like Rem. 700s, but I would not turn down a deal on a Savage.
