T/C Compass and sometimes Venture
Ruger American
Remington 783 and leftover 770's
Mossberg Patriot
Savage Axis

Out of those, I like Ruger and Mossberg. Accurate, light, and reliable... From personal experience

Do not recommend the Remington 710/770 series. They are accurate but the bolt is a poor design which binds and cannot be made to operate smoothly. The plastic bolt stop and molded sling swivels tend to break as well. It's an all around poor design. (I have one and wish the Axis and American series had been available at the time. They are substantially better rifles.)

Oh I agree... And I'm weary of the 783 due to the awful 770.

But they still exist at big box stores for cheap with a budget scopes. So I figured I'd post it because, again, they exist

as stupid as it sounds (and is) I want a 770 just to see if I can make it not awful lol!

I like Zastava true vintage Mauser style controlled round feed bolt action rifles. Having said that, I neither own nor desire to own one in .308 Winchester because the factory barrel twist rate for that cartridge is 1:12 inches. In .30-06 Springfield, .270 Winchester, and 7mm-08 the factory barrels have a twist rate of 1:10 inches, and some cartridges such as 7X57mm & 7X64mm are 1:8.67. But I digress. I have more than one in .30-06 Springfield.

IMO it's difficult to beat the versatility of a robust bolt action rifle chambered in .30-06 Springfield with 1:10 inches barrel rifling twist rate.

Pre-owned and some New Old Stock models can compete in the price range. I have no connection to this seller beyond previously purchasing an Interarms Mark X rifle in .30-06 Springfield from this merchant, at a similar price.

There are others. Zastava, Interarms Mark X, Whitworth, Remington Model 798, and Charles Daly all used actions, barreled actions, or whole rifles manufactured by Zastava.

Here are some more including a Parker Hale which used Santa Barbara CRF Mauser style actions manufactured in Spain IIRC. These are all a bit higher priced but come with scopes mounted.

Husqvarna are also nice robust rifles but they used 1:12 inches barrel rifling twist rate in similarly styled .30-06 Springfield rifles bearing their name.

Hello guys & gals.

So... Just what title says.

Any decent-quality rifles that can be found in .308 & 30-06 for around the Mosin price? $300-450?

Bolt-action or semi-auto.

I've heard Savage Axis 2s & T/C Compass & Ventures.

If anyone could be more specific than Brands, & name models, that would be much appreciated.

Quality blued steel and walnut bolt rifles are no longer en vogue and can be had for less than a Mosin. Go to Gunbroker and search a Remington Model 721 30-06. There you'll find them for $300 and less with no bids. Model 700 ADL's sell for just a little more. Either are quality rifles.

I found a few more. Again, full disclosure, I purchased a similar. 30-06 rifle from Foundation Pawn in June 2019. These have traditional rich satin blued metal parts only found on some higher end guns today. Triggers are single stage and often adjustable (devil is in the details and worth asking about up front in negotiations / Q&A with sellers).

Parts and accessories such as scope bases manufactured for commercial large ring Mauser action hunting rifles will also typically fit these rifles.
