Looking to buy my first "DO IT ALL" shotgun

Really? What ATA, NNSA, or NSCA club allowed that? Most clubs don't even allow it for practice, let alone registered........
We don't need alphabet soup or a governing body to enjoy clay sports, we just do it.

Why is semi auto bad for HD?
Some semiautomatic shotguns are less reliable than pump shotguns. The inverse is also true. First hand experience with the individual example you intend to use with the ammo you intend to use is really the only definitive way to know if a shotgun is "reliable". Many people will encourage you to "research" which brands are reliable. This of course involves going on the internet where misinformation and second hand lies are rampant. Also people who bother to post about the reliability of a certain model are much more likely to be the vocal minority of those who have experienced problems. Anecdotal evidence from friends and family is equally worthless unless they are trustworthy and are purchasing their shotgun from them. Buying a gun with a warranty and then putting it through it's paces is the only way to ensure you have a reliable example.

How do I fit a shotgun to my build? I'm 6'4" 205 lbs if that makes any difference.
You'll have to handle them and see what's comfortable and what you shoot well with. Your height is really irrelevant, it's the length of your arms and stance/grip preference that ultimately decide what works best for you. It's something only you can decide for yourself. A veteran shooter can still be of great help, but realize that you are the ultimate authority on what works for you. Try everything.

one ounce and his gold medals lol he can limit the capacity and still be legal, Best bet is rem or mossy and a couple of barrels. covers all your bases, except the olympics. :")

Remington 870 Tactical with a extra 28 inch vent rib with the rem choke setup. The tactical is just a base model rem express mag with a extended tube add the field barrel and you can do just about anything. I have a Regular express mag and the tac and have had 0 issues with either of them

So after taking in everyone's advice and doing much reading, I think I've settled on what model I want.

I am going to look for a Winchester SXP Camp/Field Combo. This way I can get the 18" for HD and a 28" (or 26") for everything else in one package.

I know accessories for them are limited but I'm not concerned about different stocks, sights, or any other tactical parts. The only thing I think that'll disappoint me is the lack of wood furniture. From what I've read, 1300 stocks will not fit. Oh well.

Thoughts?

I do have one question regarding the SXP. Winchester claims their barrels are "back bored" to .742". Does this mean they are "overbored" also? The Mossy 835 has over bored barrels and they are to be shot with shot shells only. Would this also be the case for the SXP?

Great choice!

The oooooonly downside I see is that, in my experience, winchester barrels are more expensive and harder to come by that Mossberg/Rem 870 barrels.

Well with the Camp/Field combo (which I ordered today, they are discontinued), I get one of each so I should be good unless I want a rifled one for sabots.

Also I found their barrel prices to be similar in price to Mossy and Remington barrels at about $150.

I`d go for the mossy and 2 barrels.

For scaring off teenage boys with your shotgun, add in the cost of lawyer, bail money, fines, and lost work.

Unless your state requires shotgun for deer, I`d buy the mossy with 2 barrels and save up later to buy a suitable deer rifle.

Autos are slightly better for HD than pumps if you clean and lube them properly. Their downside is they cost much more, which is a big consideration for most folks, and it goes into the stratospher if you want a HD shotgun for each family member who can handle it.

Well..... he doesn't have to LITERALLY scare them off....

He could JUST HAPPEN to be cleaning the shotgun in the living room when the boys show up lookin for his daughter... :D

dbarky

Lots of advice mostly good. My .02...Remington 870 28", screw in chokes, 12 ga.. Vent rib is nice, but not totally necessary. Good shooting.

I'd go with a semi from either Mossberg or Benelli depending on budget and buy a second barrel so you have an 18" HD cylinder choke barrel and a 28" or 30" with changeable chokes for hunting/trap.
