I had been watching Sarcoinc.com like a hawk for sometime mustering the logic to get a 1911. Yeah I know a lot of the great details. Fortunately a buddy of mine who couldn't manage his money sold me his Ruger P345 and Taurus PT 1911 for $400(yes for both of them), so I'm not to hard up about it. I wanted to convert the Taurus to .460 Rowland, and have a knock around 1911 like the Rock Island for instace, guess the P345 will have to fit that role even though it's a 1911 it's still a good gun oveall. And yes I have plenty of .45 ACP.
For the longest time I'd want a 1911 but then a S&W Model 19 would fall into my lap, or I'd get a great deal on a Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum(got 7.5" for $350, and 4" for $300), so on and so on. Whenever my spare throw away cash stash got ready for me to make a move on a 1911, something too good to pass up came around. And of course there were the AR rifles in between and such.
After I got the Taurus I thought great, now I have a 1911. My uncle owns a bunch of 1911s he built from parts he's ordered from Caspian. I'm hoping Fusion gets around to making a wide frame for 10mm so I can have high-capacity 1911 10mm in a 1911 platform. The Taurus though just doesn't feel like a real 1911 in my hands like my Uncle's 1911s do. I like the Taurus but once I have the capital set aside to get the conversion and five hundred loaded rounds and enough components to reload another two-thousand, the Taurus will be doing duty strictly as a .460 Rowland. I had been hoping to order up .45 Frame kits from SARCO to build my own 1911, i've helped my Uncle a number of times on his, and I'm sure he wouldn't mind helping me a little bit as I have asked him a number of times. But by the time that is done I'm at over $300 and when the Rock Island G.I.s were going for $339(now $379) I could get one through my FFL guy for shy of $380 but now if I'm going to buy a plain jane 1911 I might as well just shell out another $100-$150 and get a used Springfield from the local Pawnshops(they have them at those prices).
The Rock Island had been the only cheap and good quality option out there for people wanting 1911s, now it looks like that is disappearing. If it is going to run you $400 instead of $300, why not tack another $100 and get a good used quality model instead that is a Colt or Springfield.
I realize maybe I'm griping like a spoiled child but a cheap and good quality 1911 for less than $350 would really corner the market in my opinion. Too bad we're not likely to see those anytime soon.
