Low felt recoil 9mm help

A Government length 9mm has very, very little recoil. As in almost none. I had to stop shooting mine, because I would just about freak out when I'd go back to shooting my others in 10mm and .45ACP. I'd guess a Commander length 9mm would be only slightly heavier in the recoil department.

However, I had one of the Officer's length Springfield in 9mm and the thing kicked like a mule! Also had a Defender in .40 S&W. Same story.

Since you're familiar with the 1911, I'd encourage you to try a Commander length model in 9mm. It's been too long since I've shot a BHP in 9mm, but I would guess a Commander length 1911 would have slightly less recoil, but certainly in the same neighborhood. Sure would be hard to go wrong with a BHP.

my personal fave is the taurus 917c - never misses a fire , smooth trigger action , low recoil (my 9 yr old daughter shots it with me at the range) lots of great features plus a 20 round capacity - all in all a great gun !

interesting comparison of the CZ 75 PCR and the H&K P-7.

so the P-7 has a longer barrel in a package which is about a half inch shorter and a quarter of an inch less tall.

The P-7 barrel is .23 inch. longer and half an inch shorter, yes

They are equal weight and the PCR carrier 6 more rounds. If the OP was interested in 3 inch barrels, we could look at the RAMI, which is dimensionally smaller than the P-7 and carriers 2 more rounds. :neener:

You might be placing too much emphasis on barrel length when it comes to the 9mm. The 45acp is a relatively low pressure round and looses a lot of velocity when shot from a 3-4 inch barrel. Since it isn't a particularly high velocity round anyhow it looses a lot of its effectiveness. The 9mm on the other hand looses less velocity and effectiveness and since it operates at a higher velocity (in its lighter loadings) it tends to stay within its better operating range better than the 45. Modern loads like the already mentioned golden saber, the Federal HST, Gold Dots, etc...l also help quite a bit. I carry either my S&W 9C, or my H&K P7 with Federal 124gr HSTs and I have a lot of confidence in both.

I've never been a fan of the 147gr HPs in the past. They were poor expanders, over penetrated, and the velocity was unimpressive. The recoil impulse is also a bit stronger than lighter loads but it is less snappy which may give you less perceived recoil. Modern 147gr loads like the 147gr Federal HST are pretty impressive. Its loaded to around 1000fps and expands reliably to a large diameter. I wouldn't feel bad about carrying that round at all. I compromise with the 124gr. Its heavier than the 115gr yet has about 150fps more than the 147gr load. It has soft recoils and (most importantly to me) shoots to the same point of aim as my 115gr practice loads.

The CZ Compact might mitigate perceived recoil more, as it is a steel frame, with standard safety. The PCR or P01 doesn't have that much felt recoil, to me, than any other compact handgun, and come with decockers, if that's important to the OP. I CCW a PCR and P01 every day.

i don't think barrel lenght is that big an issued either...besides the OP specifying that he wanted at least a 4" barrel.

i was just bringing up that fact that the P7 fits a full 4" barrel into a smaller package than competitors...it's just an outstanding design

You might consider an STI Guardian (3.9") or the Ranger II (4.15") Both come in 9mm and are all steel 1911s. I carry the Guardian and love it. The weight reduces the recoil and it is the most accurate compact I've ever had experience with. You can't go wrong with a smooth shooting STI.
