may not be the right place to ask this, but as long as we are talking receivers, do I do better to build a gun out of stripped upper and lowers, or to just buy the whole thing new? (I want a lefty stag gun)

question 2, the bushmaster carbon receiver, good or bad?

any of those will shoot fine. ive owned, rra and bm but now down to a lmt and colt 6920.

my friends dpms will do the exact same thing at a lower cost. i just wanted a colt.........

You'll need tools to build your own. The upper gets a lot more in-depth requiring more knowledge and specialized tools. I'm into buying complete uppers and then a stripped lower with a lower parts kit. To assemble a lower you'll just need a set of roll pin punches and a stock wrench. Most people buy a complete rifle first so they can get general knowledge of the platform, it also makes building one in the future that much easier when you have a completed functional example to look at.

Consider buying a complete LH Stag upper and sourcing a complete lower elsewhere. Maybe get a lower that's complete minus the stock and put one on yourself. This will save you a hefty federal excise tax that's required on purchasing a complete rifle.

It's the upper that is critical on an AR. As long as all the holes are in the right place and the magazine well is in spec you can build a quality AR on anyone's lower.

I have an Essential Arms (first version, bought in 1982) lower that I used on a designated marksman's rifle I built with Colt parts. Outside of the color being much lighter then the current colors (fixed that with Gun Kote) it has been perfect.

Agreed. The finish is going to be the only real difference in a lower. Get whatever you can local at a decent price.

My next lower will be a Mega simply because I like the gator grip on the mag well.

DS and Stag are close in price. You can get both delivered for $110

Aloharover, is that price for a stripped lower or complete? If I can get a complete Stag lower for $110 shipped, point me in that direction!

Hell if I could get a complete lower for 110 I would be happy ;)

No this price is for a stripped lower shipped to your FFL. I throw in the LPK for $60. if you want it assembled the price is $180.
This page explains all of the options :D

The lowers are the same.

The Stag LH rifles simply add an ambi safety and a Norgon Ambi-Catch to a standard lower.

interesting....
Is there any way to find all the parts for an ar build, in which EACH part will cost 99.99$USD or less?

So of course a disconnector is only 6$, no problem, but a barrel is usually a couple hundred. I've seen upper recievers for 100$.

Point being, if this is the case, I could build an AR completley from the internet (minus the reciever of course, i'd buy that here) for super cheap just by ordering parts and assembeling it myself. The only catch would be that the site would have to ship to canada. Gunaccessories.com has quite a few parts, but barrels won't be shipped internationally..

The US won't allow any gun-part over 99.99$USD to be shipped out of the country without a permit, thus the request for parts under 99$.

anyone?

I bought 2 - CMMG stipped lowers in June of 2005, for $128 each after tax in MO. The fit and finish is exact to Rock River Arms, can't find a flaw on them. I know other people with CMMG lowers and complete rifles, never a single complaint.

I would have bought complete rifles, had the money to do it, but I'm stationed in CA, so they had to be brought in as stripped lowers, then resistered and then assembled into "dangerous black guns".

I got a stripped DPMS lower for $109.00, the DPMS LPK for $67.00, and a collapsible stock for $72.00 (okay, so I splurged a little and bought the nicer stock). Ordered the complete DPMS upper from Midway for $425, IIRC. Total = $673 give or take + tax and shipping. The same model from DPMS runs around $850 - $900, so I saved quite a bit. I'm sure I could have saved more by shopping around a bit, but building your own is great fun and I wanted a completely DPMS build. I may mix and match later. Great thread!

I've got a Stag, an RRA and two Essential Arms lowers... They're all interchangable (quality-wise) as far as I'm concerned.

Yep, Stag Arms is the best of the bunch. Heck, they are just as good or better than many AR15's that are priced higher than them.

I know this is older thread, but last night my gunsmith got my essential arms lower in. He said he talked to the owner of essential arms and the guy told him they buy their lowers 80% milled from FN. Then they detail mill the rest. Basically he said they are made at the same place the military's are.

Follow up:

Ok, I was going to try to find a Stag locally for $120-130. It's not happening. The cheapest lower I can find locally is a DPMS for $135+tax. There seems to be a shortage around here now... I used to see Stag all over the place at guns shows for $120, but they seem to have disappeared.

Since the best price I can find on Stag is about $110 shipped, and then I will have to pay $25 transfer fee, that's worse than the $135 DPMS.

So, I am considering Superior Arms. It looks like I can get that shipped and transferred for $110.

Has anybody had any BAD experience with Superior? I heard that early production had tight mag wells, but I understand that has been fixed.

Maybe not to you, but an AR is supposed to inspire feelings of coolness. A big funny looking euro-deer doesn't work for me.

Have you ever tasted one of those Euro deers? Way better than any other red meat I have had... Including good ole' cows.
