SCOPES WORK REALLY WELL ON RIFLES THAT ARE DESIGNS FOR SCOPES. They can be sort of like trying to put wings on a toad frog when used on some guns that are not designed for scopes or are not stocked for scopes. They can destroy the handling qualities of a double rifle or a muzzle loader stocked for iron sights. I once had a TC Renegade. It probably could have worn a low power scope pretty well but a scope just sits too high for my Lyman "Great Plains" rifle & my Pedersoli, Kodiak .45-70 SXS. I am really pleased with how the .45-70 shoots. I didn't have to do any load development at all. I guess you could call it NOS. It was used but I don't think it was ever even sighted in. Us old "dinosaurs" can get some great deals as this new "AR 15" crowd doesn't recognize the value of anything without a magazine. Anyway, the .45-70 shot within an inch @ 50 yds. with both barrels using my old 405 gr.+/- cast bullet loads I used in my Ruger #1. These are not hot loads (under 28000 psi) & run about 1600 - 1700 fps.. I don't think it is wise to push the limits with the Pedersoli.
Well, enough background, what is the best solution or compromise? Obviously, neither rifle has long range potential so high magnification is not needed. A ghost ring peep sight works better in low light than a standard iron sight. A regular red dot is still too high. What about a low or ultra low profile red (or green) dot sight? I have read where some folks don't think anything that uses batteries is a good idea on a DG rifle but these sights are small. Should you have to shoot really fast, it's a "point & shoot" situation anyway & you would just look through or around the sight. Quick detachable mounts would be desirable. That wouldn't be a problem with non dangerous game as the batteries are said to last forever & you still can have your iron sights for backup.
So, that's my take. Since I have no experience with a low profile "dot" sights, I would like to hear from those that do. I would also like to hear about other low profile alternatives. Keep in mind these are close range brush guns. A 100 yd. shot would be a long shot! It is imperative that the natural handling qualities of the gun be maintained.

Yes, that's the idea but the mounts won't work. The surface they need to mounted on is flat or nearly flat, as in the case of the rib between the barrels of a double rifle. This particular rifle or rifles is a PEDERSOLI KODIAK SXS 45-70 & a Kodiak .58 cal. front loader. The 3rd. rifle is a Lyman Great Planes rifle in .54 cal., which has a octagonal barrel. Perhaps a gunsmith could make a mount or modify an existing mount.
