I dont know much about red dots other than playing with an open red dot on a Crossman pump pellet pistol.

I'm considering getting a closed red dot to be used on a Ruger PC or possibly 10/22.

I'm hoping for some info and guidance particularly in regards to cowitness & 1/3 cowitness. I think I understand the difference (dot perfectly lined up with iron sights vs dot just above iron sight but iron sight still in view thru glass; please correct me if I'm misunderstanding)

I'm considering the TRS-25, TRS-125, & Romeo 5.

The TRS-125 looks to be the new offering to counter the Romeo5 but it doesn't have shake-a-wake and is still 3moa.

On a Ruger PCC, which of those red dots cowitness or 1/3 cowitness and with which riser (if any)?

If I used the high riser, would the iron sight be visible thru the riser (under the red dot body)?

What's generally preferred? Exact cowitness or 1/3 cowitness or tower the red dot over the iron sights and look under the red dot to use the irons?

Like I said, I'm a newb at red dots. I'm guessing that I might like 1/3 cowitness but that's based on not much - I generally set my scopes to shoot 6 o'clock sight picture so maybe 1/3 will semi replicate the sight pic I'm used to?

In regards to putting them on a 10/22, it seems they all those red dots would. just look over the iron sights sinve 10/22 irons are pretty low and the rear folds down - IOW, no cowitnessing at all. Correct???

Help me learn, please. Babble on... I'm all ears and eyes right now.

PS, I did search 1st, lol

A red dot will not co-witness with the sights on a Ruger PCC. I have a Romeo 5 on mine, and it sets a lot higher than the iron sights.

That's the PCC model I have as well.

Thanks for the pic. I didn't think to look at mine and would have seen and realized it won't cowitness at all.

I saw a pic thru the romeo that showed some of the iron sight partially visible (maybe 1/3 cowitness...? (pic may have been on a ruger forum).

I wonder if it was aftermarket iron sights or a different model ruger PC with taller sights....? Anyways,,,,

What's your thoughts on using a taller riser in effort to see the irons underneath? Would it work? Good idea or counter productive?

Don’t use a taller sight riser. It’s already too high even with no riser. If you get a proper cheek weld you can see the iron sights but the Romeo 5 with no riser is significantly higher. Ideally you need a cheek riser if you want actual cheek weld.

no way you’ll be able to cowitness with irons on this rifle.

I have the TRS-25 on my Ruger PCC. I started with a riser but didn't like it. After taking it off I can line up the red dot with the front sight. It works perfectly for me. This is my first and only red dot. So far, so good and I'm happy.

Was about to comment that the TRS-25 low hugs the rail far better than the rest you’ve mentioned. Bushnell does make a higher AR version but you should avoid that one for your Ruger.

My TRS-25 has sat on a 10/22 before, but the scope rail is already tall enough to obscure the irons.

What you may want to try is a quick release mount. I bought one, worked so well I bought a few of these from Amazon. Use them to swap a dot onto not only the Ruger PC but several pistols and PCC's with a rail. For something that costs a 10 spot the damn things work quite well. They are cheap enough that if you try one and do not like it you're only out $10.

Like the others have said, the Ruger will not co-witness. I confirmed the zero on my irons, and then moved to a red dot. I started with the Sig Romeo 5 and it is great. Recently I moved to this: https://www.primaryarms.com/primary...ith-green-illuminated-acss-gemini-9mm-reticle and it is better.

This prism sights still works like a red dot, the has an etched reticle that works with no batteries, and has a focus ring in the rear. The etched reticle eliminates the fear of a battery dying at the wrong time and the rear focus eliminates the star burst I get from red dots vs my astigmatism. The ranging feature works great on my Ruger PC Carbine. Overall I am very happy with this combo.

I have a TRS25 low mount on my PC carbine. It took me about 15 shots to dial it in about 2” high at 25 yards. (Target #4 is the final product. 25 was all the range I had.)

I haven’t spent the time, ammo and effort to Co-witness sights on my AR’s, nor my PC carbine, but if I needed to I I bet I could look through the tube and get close with the PC. With my AR’s I use quick detachable mounts, if the dot croaks I’ll pop it off and use the irons.

I also borrowed a great idea from a THR member and turned a Husky 22” tool tote and Kaisen foam into an awesome carry case for the PC and some 33 round Glock mags. (I can’t recall who posted about it for me to give the full credit they deserve .)

Stay safe.
