Low Recoil .44 Mag Ammo?

Unless the OP is made of money, he needs to start reloading if he wants to shoot enough to get comfortable with his progress with any Magnum, and certainly any handgun caliber starting with a "4" other than .45 ACP----and who knows when the supply of reasonable ,45 ACP will dry up?
Right now in my town, .45 ACP ball is actually cheaper than .38 SPLs

I agree with sabbfan #6 post. I bought a 44 magnum awhile back and the people who sold it to me threw in a box of Blazer 44 magnum ammo. It is the mildest recoiling factory 44 Magnum ammo I've ever shot. Not quite as low recoil as a 44 special but not to bad. And since you don't reload the aluminum cases, it won't bother you to throw them away. I always reload the guns that I have so I'm not really sure if it is as inexpensive as other brands but since they gave it to me as part of the deal , I'm assuming that it's not as expensive as some premium brands.

Are there any self defense loads that can be considered lite magnums or low recoil like there are for 357 mag?
Every load can be a self defense load, if that's all you got.
The HSM .44 Spl cowboy loads with 240 grain LSWCs is no slouch IMHO.

I wouldn't think "light recoil self defense" would be 44 Magnum. We would have to start by agreeing on what is self defense. If it hollow point, then there needs to be enough velocity for bullet performance. Georgia Arms again has two 1000 fps offerings that are not hollow point but should get it done nonetheless.

Also, what type of revolver is the OP shooting?
The muzzle blast from a short barrel is, IMHO, every bit as disconcerting as recoil.
A smaller revolver will have less steel to dampen even lighter recoil than a large boat anchor of a revolver.
Good stocks can also go a long way towards mitigating the nastiness.

I couldn't afford 44mag if I didn't reload. About the best advise you could find, was given here. Nothings' cheap, but Sportmans' has some, for an ok price. After looking at these prices, I think I will go out and load some more of my little 200 gr. SWC lead cast, with Unique, for about 7cents a piece, LOL. Didn't remember how spoiled I was, just paying for a primer and alittle powder.

Shoot, the majority of the 44 Mag loads I shoot would be called light by some folks. The 250 grain Keith bullet (from an old Lyman 429421 mould with proper square grease groove) and either a moderate charge of Unique or 17.5 grains of 2400.

Check out this stuff from Lax Ammo. 240 gr bullet at 1026 fps. 250rds for $104. Out of stock right now, but sign up to get notified. That’s 400fps slower than the last Winchester white box I chronoed from my 29 so should be significantly less recoil.

Thanks for that link. I signed up to get notice when it's back in stock.

I also signed up to get notified when this .44 Special ammo is back in stock. It should be even more of a powder puff load at 793fps.

For those who suggested reloading, it's something I would like to do some day if/when I get to retire (maybe in a couple of years). But until then, my life seems to be whirlwind of unending things I need to do. So, unless and until I can retire, I just won't have the time and I'll have to pony up for factory ammo.

OP, can you not find the .44 spl ammo you need online. I buy almost no ammo in brick and mortar stores anymore.

Right now, just a Super Blackhawk with 7.5" barrel. The WWB .44 mag isn't terrible with that gun, but I'd like to find something with a little lighter load since I'm just plinking with it right now.

I also have a Marlin 1894S, and the WWB is fine with it.
You know that is going to play heck with your point of aim. Total PITA.
