Just took my NIB Ruger .44 Mag Super Blackhawk to the range for the first time. Bought it at a gunshow last weekend. It has a 4 5/8" barrel, unfluted cylinder, and is blued. Got it for $425. Shot a box of .44 Special SWC through it and loved it! This is my first .44 cal pistol. Very low recoil, and kept 5 shots in a 1.5" at 35 feet. Want to buy a box of .44 Mag ammo and try that next week - should be interesting to see what the difference is.

Congrats on your new gun. The SBH is one darn good revolver. You'll find there is QUITE a difference between the .44 Sp and the .44 Mag. For a lot of shooting, you might consider a shooting glove unless you're as tough as some here claim to be:)

I handload for mine, so my loads run the spectrum from tinkerbell powderpuff loads to... umm, hot. My favorite loads are 44 spl wadcutters, I can rip an X-ring apart with those.

Great gun, you'll love.

I have the same weapon you do- I have to tell you that the Magnums beat my hand up until I put on a set of black rubber hogue grips on it. Now I find the recoil VERY manageable and able to continuously comfortably shoot Magnums all day if I so choose. I just brought my SBH and Henry Big Boy Deluxe in .44 to the range yest. and I had a blast!
Enjoy! and ps... it is nice to see a new one if you can post pics.

First difference will be the recoil and you tossing that low recoil statement out the window. :D

Ok, bought a box of Speer GD .44 ammo, 240 gr. running at 1400 fps. Holy $#!T, those rounds certainly say "hello". I shot two of those rounds and had enough. They did shoot to point of aim and I kept them an inch apart at 30'. Time for a pair of shooting gloves. Really nice flexibility in a gun though, both special and magnum loads. Time to put some more .44 Spcl rounds through it this weekend!

I have the exact same gun and it's one of the best there is. You've found the huge difference between the specials and magnums, now the trick is to find the sweet spot that makes that gun just right for you. Through reloading, I've gotten mine to the point where I can shoot it all day long and it's still powerful enough to take care of anything I need taken care of.

This is my "Big Gun" and I plan to have it as long as I can shoot.

Nice find! Have shot a blackhawk .44 mag and it was fun, but have a hard time controlling the gun with the cowboy grip vs. a Redhawk with the more standard grip. Hm. Anyway, enjoy!!

Everyone should own a 4-5/8" Super Blackhawk! To me they just feel right. They can be a but tiresome with full power loads, though. I like to shoot a mid-range load - a 240-ish grain SWC at around 1000 fps will do most anything that I require of it, and is a lot more pleasant to shoot than the full power stuff.

I prefer and have the 5.5" version of the SBH. I reload so I can tame the 44 mag down to managable levels, but do on occasion soup them up to remind myself why I don't.

I can see your addicted so welcome to the fold. I love the 44 special and shoot them all the time. I carry a 44 special CCW and am not really inclined to change..

I have the stainless 7 1/2 inch Super blackhawk. It would really treat your hands bad with the wood grips. My brother -in-law gave me for my birthday years ago a super nice houge grip that fits it great! He has the same gun.He also found at sportsmans guide the leather bandilier holster.Super nice set up when in the woods hunting.I am really pleased with the Georgia Arms deer stopper ammo!It works very well!!!

Can you load the magnums down to special velocities or do you have to use special brass for those mild loads? I will be buying one soon, and would rather use the same brass for all rather than buy two different types.

IIRC, you can load the .44mag cases down close to the .44 spec., but not all the way. I load Unique under a 240gr JHP that runs about 1100fps that is nuttin' like my hunting loads in recoil, but is still accurate enough to kill bowling pins without adjusting the sights.

You can load the Mags down but I have just found it better to start with special cases if you want a sub load. Sarvisian hit the nail on the head about finding the sweet spot. I found two loads for my SBH that shoot to the exact point of aim that will cover any situation I can think to use the revolver for without all the dramatics and tendinitis. If you handload I would be glad to share those recipe's if interested.
