I do most of my shooting at a couple of indoor ranges here in the Seattle area. Neither of these ranges allow one to shoot birdshot; buckshot and slugs are the only rounds permitted.

Unfortunately, shooting a lot of buckshot in an indoor range is pretty hard on both the ears and the shoulders. Does anyone make a low-powered buck or slug round that is strictly intended for training/target shooting?

there is low recoil 00 buck available.
never tried it. my lgs doesnt carry them

Federal makes low recoil slugs and buck. Could always load your own, at some point.

Other than recommending reloading, which might be your best course of action for tailored loads, I do know that rubber and plastic buckshot is available from fiocchi, S&B (and possibly others). The patterns on paper should be somewhat similar at close ranges and recoil should be mild, but it's a bit pricey at a buck a shell. I'd imagine ricochet remains a real possibility as well.

Just another option to add to the mix.

Winchester makes a "WINLITE" Low Recoil Slug:

Gauge 12
Shot Category Low Recoil Slug
Length (in.) 2 3/4"
Velocity fps @ 3 ft. 1450
Oz. Shot 400 Gr.
Shot Size PTHP Sabot Slug
They also have a rifled 1 oz. shot version as well if needed.

Good Luck.:)

There are tons of low recoil buckshot loads out there. Remington, Winchester, Hornady, heck just about everybody offers one. They are generally 8 projectiles instead of the more usual 9, and have reduced powder loads as well. I have shot thousands of them. If your gun fits and your technique is right you will hardly feel a thing.

I found on some Rio 9 ball low recoil at not too bad a price:

There is a Fiocchi Aero slug, 1 oz @ 1150 fps. About as light as you will go without going to mini-slugs. I think there is a Fiocchi 7/8 oz but the velocity is higher, so recoil might not be less.

Hornady critical defense 00 buck is only 8 pellets. I'm not sure if it's designed to be less recoil but it is definitely less recoil than the budget birdshot from walmart.

You may want to find another place to shoot...

shooting buckshot loads frequently can be expensive. Investigate some and look into people with private land etc that might let you shoot or perhaps a club or different range. Just a thought. Snoop

Actually, the vast majority of the low recoil 00 buck sold is nine pellet, by probably 20 to 1. The eight pellet load first introduced by Remington had slightly better patterns than many 00 loads, until the advent of the Flite Control wad used by Federal and Hornady in some of their buckshot loads. There is little need for eight pellet loads today, and few police departments still use them.
