There are quite a few threads here about how many guns would you own if...

There are lists of one, three, five and so on.

I have come up with my list. I wanted as much variety and versatility as possible with as few guns as possible. The minimum number of guns for my list is seven. Call this my happy minimum.

There are three handguns on my list. I would want a double action revolver, a single action revolver, and a semi-auto pistol. One handgun would be for practice and plinking, one for SD, and one to take care of more serious duties. Here would be my three handguns.

1. For practice and plinking: a double action 22 rimfire revolver
2. For SD: some sort of 9mm semi-auto
3. For Serious Application: A single action revolver in 45 Colt

My rifle list also numbers three. I would want a rifle that would be cheap to practice, one to take care of medium sized game at practical ranges, and one for nastier critters encountered up close and personal. Here are my three rifles.

1. A 22 semi automatic rifle.
2. A bolt action in either 30-06 or 280 Remington.
3. A lever action in 45-70 Gov't.

One more gun, a shotgun. While I am a big fan of the smaller gauges, having limited my collection to one scattergun means I have to make it as versatile as possible. Here is my one shotgun.

1. A 12 gauge, field type, self-loader.

If I had the seven guns listed here I would be pretty happy. I would have guns in a variety of actions and calibers. I would be able to handle just any shooting situation that I can think of. But having more guns makes me more happy.

Okay, I'll play.

Handguns.
1. For practice and plinking: Ruger Mark III, S&W model 15 38 Spl
2. For SD (Away from home): S&W model 60, Llama MicroMax 380, KelTec P-11 9mm
3. For Serious Application: S&W model 27 357 mag, 1911 45 ACP

Rifles.
1. Plinking: 22 semi auto.
2. SD (And plinking): 30 Carbine, Mini-30 (7.62x39), Saga Carcine (7.62x39).
3. Serious App: M1A, Marlin 30/30 (I guess that could qualify)

shotgun.
1. A 12 gauge, Winchester 1300 Defender, 12 guage pump.

seven??

Handguns: s&w 317, s&w 3" 60
rifles: savage 99, marlin 39d
shotgun: h&r 20 gauge
I know that's only five but it covers everything from doves to grizzlies. It could be done cheaper.

Phoenix hp22, Eastern block tokarev or makarov
Mosin Nagant rifle, one of several cheap 22 bolt actions
Cheap pump shotgun
or another route
phoenix
cheap 22
cheap shot gun with choke tubes
hey thats only three Hail versitillity I lived for years with only three, we ate game, had fun and got out of some tight spots. Had no choke tubes, just full choke

You are right. I suppose cutting it down to three should handle all situations.

My list is the minimum list that would make me happy.

My list covers all pratical shooting applications on this continent. It has a variety of different actions, after all, isn't variety suppose to be the spice of life?

This list would put my happy meter in the green, but it wouldn't be quite pegged out. It would take another dozen or so guns to do that.;)

Let's really trim this down.

AR-15, the grownup's erector set, with:

An M4 upper for .223, everything from cheap, surplus 55gr. hardball for plinking to 62gr. steel-core for longer range and penetration.
A 20 or 24 inch stainless bull barrel upper for long range target/varmint work.
A 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC upper for bigger game.
A National Match upper if you want to join the High Power competetion.
Adorn with your choice of (interchangeable) stocks, pistol grips, rails, forends, sights, optics, lights, bells and whistles.

Remington 870, the other grownup erector set, with:

A ribbed barrel for hunting and targets; interchangeable chokes if you like.
An 18" inch barrel with mag extender for HD, SD, or any D.
A rifled slug barrel for those special times when only an ounce of lead will convince.
Choose from the widest selection of ammo known to man, from bird shot to buckshot to buck and ball, pumpkin balls and rifled slugs, flechettes and rock salt.
Any manner of stocks, slings, forearms, rails, attachments, and optics to meet the occasion.

A high-cap, polymer-and-striker .40 S&W handgun.
Near-.45ACP power with near-9mm capacity. Drop in a .357 Sig barrel if you like.
Customize for big hands or small hands, soft loads or zombie killers, iron or optical sights, lights, lasers, or strobes, conventional or extended mags. Use for everything from competition to HD to concealed carry.

For cheap fun: Ruger 10/22, still another grownup erector set.

I think a good minimum battery should include the following:

1. Service type pistol in caliber 9mm to .45 acp. This is your range gun, competition gun, plinking gun, HD gun. If you can manage it, this may also be your EDC.

2. Carry gun. I don't want to carry a large service pistol all day. I prefer something smaller and lighter. You can omit this one if you don't mind carrying a larger gun.

3. Pocket gun. I find there are times when I want a gun that I can just drop in a pocket. If you don't have those times, you can omit this one too.

4. .22 LR handgun. Plinking, cheap trigger time, competition, training. There are many good choices, but my favorite is a conversion unit for a service pistol.

5. .357 revolver. Just because everybody ought to have one.

6. Scoped center-fire rifle. If you don't hunt, you can leave this off your list.

7. Center-fire carbine. I don't believe in the zombie wars, but I still enjoy plinking, hunting, and competing with a carbine. You might not have any possible use for one.

8. Shotgun, 12 ga. short barrel. You can add barrels to suit your needs.

9. .22 LR rifle. Although I live in the boonies and have a range in the yard, I rarely have occasion to shoot a .22 rifle. Still, no battery would be complete without one.

Depending on where you live, your interests, and your preferences. You could whittle this list down to four. A 9mm to .45 pistol, a .22 pistol, a .22 rifle, and a shotgun.

Seven it is. I will play by the rules:)

1. Springfield Loaded Champion 1911 .45acp pistol
2. Savage Mark II FSS .22 rifle w/ scope
3. Remington Law Enforcement 870 12 gauge shotgun
4. Converted and tricked out Saiga .308 rifle w/ cqb scope
5. ER shaw custom in 280rem w/ long heavy barrel. set up for longer range
6. Ruger LCP
7. T/C .50 cal muzzle loader.

That ought to do just about everything I reckon.
