I have the 49th ed. of the Lyman's guide and wondered if there is any benefit in getting the newest 50th ed. release. I see there are some new calibers, but does anyone know if they have added new loads to the older calibers?

Anything else of value vs. the 49th edition?

Thanks!

My old paperback kept hitting other books on either side on the shelf above me.
I purchased the new one with hard cover--problem solved

Any differences other than the cover for you? Is there more load data for the older loads, or is it the same data as the older revision?

You really do not need to buy a new manual every time one is published. The hard cover is worth $40. $30 for the soft cover($50Cdn). You'd have nothing left for powder. snicker.

Yeah, I read over that thread from the summer (thank you mdemetz) and it looks like there is not enough new information to make it worth while.

Thanks everyone.

I bought it right away and was kind of disappointed. I didn't see any major changes on the cartridges I load. Also, it's a personal grievance, but I like H4350, I've found it to be excellent in many cartridges from .243 to .30-06. There are no H4350 loads anywhere in the 50th edition... Not even in the 6.5 Creedmoor section, a dominant pairing to say the least. I just can't figure out how they could ignore such a useful and popular rifle powder. You might find it useful to upgrade depending on what you load, but if I had it to do over I'd probably stick with 49.

I wouldn't. Any new data is just coming from the bullet or powder mfg's, and most of that is free from their websites. Print it and stick it in your 49th.

Ha! Funny you say that! My current 49th ed. Lyman has a bunch of manufacturer's pages stuck in the appropriate sections!

Honestly, for a seasoned reloader there is nothing in the new editions that you cannot find online from either the powder manufacturer sites or from reloadammo.com & handloads.com

For those on a budget, I noticed that Amazon sells used copies of the 49th edition for around $15!

The Lyman 50th edition is a big improvement. There are several new articles in the "How-To" section by leading experts in their fields. The entire book is now printed in full color making it much more pleasant to read. Errors have been corrected and some existing load data has been revised. Loading data for lots of new cartridges has been included in the 50th edition. New bullets for existing cartridges has also been included in the new book. There is a LOT of new data in this book and lots of updated data for existing cartridges. The Lyman Manual has always been my "Go-To" manual and the 50th is the best yet. Go to your local bookstore and read the Forward to get an idea of all the new stuff in this edition. I don't skimp on reloading manuals and I think this one is the best-of-the-best. It's well worth the price.

I've been reloading for a few years and only do the few calibers I have and shoot. Since adding a 5.56x45 caliber rifle I see I'll need recipes for this caliber. My loading bench has the caliber specific books but I rarely change powder or primers. I just change bullets according to availability.

In reality if you are not interested in the new cartridges added in the Lyman 50th Edition Load manual then you really don't need #50 if you already have #49. No new powders seem to be added in the cartridges I load. I'm disappointed they didn't add the Enduron powders but I guess they were released too close to publication time.

Did I need the #50 since I already had #49, probably not but I'm a load manual whore so I bought it anyway. (Hard Cover for $24)

Some new data but not much different than #49 IMO. No CFE-P, BE86 data for some of the other new powders that have come out since #49.
My 49 was paperback and falling apart so I got 50. Not a waste of money just not much new info as I would have hoped for.

Added data for
17 Hornet, 6.5 Creedmore, 6.5 Grendel, 6.5X284 Norma, 26 Nosler, 28 Nosler, 300 AAC Blackout, 300 RCM, 338 RCM, 9.3 X62 9.3 X74R, 450 Bushmaster, 458 SOCOm, 50 Beowolf. Added some bullets as well. Can't remember if there was WIN Autocomp data in 49 but there is in 50. No CFE-Pistol data, there is CFE 223 powder data, and Oh
Color pictures of bullets and loaded ammo. Just don't know how I lived without the color pictureso_O
