Was handling an M-70 type "AK" that seemed well built and was pretty heavy. I'm also toying with the idea of converting a Saiga. Which would be better & why--a stock M-70 with no modifications or a Saiga sporter converted to an "AK"? How do the two compare? Pros/cons of each? Can't afford both or I'd do that and compare myself.

I'd say it comes down to price point, and your ability and desire to restore a Saiga. If you're into factory offerings, get the Yugo. If you're into modifying and customizing, get the Saiga. The conversion is easy, IMO.

I like the Yugo M70 a lot but part of it comes down to the versatility of it. If you start with a stock Saiga you can do pretty much anything you want to it, whether that's going all tactical or keeping it really traditional. With the Yugo you're going to be limited a bit, particularly in reference to the stocks. Yugo's use a different shoulder stock mounting design from all the other variants so it's hard to switch that if you don't like it. I think some of the other dimensions on the M70 are supposed to be a little different as well but I'll let somebody more knowledgeable comment on that.

From a standpoint of reliability and accuracy, they're both good to go.

Having built a Saiga, I'll also point out they are NEW from the factory, unlike the M70. I actually prefer the stock handguard on the Saiga too.

Just so you know I wouldn't consider it 'easy' to convert one. It definitely takes some tools and skillsets to do it properly, especially installing the Dinzag bullet guide.
