I have been looking into getting an AR style .223, my budget is under 1000$. I have read nothing but great reviews about the M&P 15. They can be had for under 700$ Any thoughts?

I LOVE my Del-ton. If you buy a parts kit from their website http://del-ton.com and then a stripped lower of your choice, it's probably the best, cheapest option available. and they're 5.56, not .223.

"best" is dependant upon intended use, but for under 1,000 the best is generally going to be a Colt 6920

^This^

Next in line I would say is the Spikes Middy LE at around $800.

PSA and M&P Sport can be had for around $600 and are a good value for the average shooter.

I'm not an AR expert, but if I was buying an entry level AR, the M&P Sport would be my hands down favorite at under $600, which is what they go for in my area. If you open it up to under $1000, I'd probably end up somewhere else.

My AR Expert (my son) just said "for $600 you just can't beat the S&W Sport"

I really don't know what is the BEST, but they are selling a lot of the M&P 15 Sports. A lot of people like them.

When the flat top m&p was 599$ from cdnn i think they where a great deal. At the prices they are at now i would just get the colt for a bit more

Definitely not when you can get a COLT for under $1000 these days just about everywhere

I can easily build a free float, mid gas, premium 16" barrel .223 Wilde chambered AR for $750
You'd be looking at a mil spec and better rig that would shoot under moa and do it for 30,000 + rounds. My last issue Colt would not do that. Many will I know but by comparison to the S&W a well thought out build seems a better option to me.

the colt's are still a few hundred dollars more, and to some people, that is a big difference...
That's not what he asked....he asked under $1000. The Colt is under $1000 and better than an M&P

if under $1k is your price point, and you don't want to build, i'd definitely buy the colt6920. if your looking to spend less than that, depending upon how you want it configured, i'd look into building a lower and buying a complete upper.

Not everybody wants to build one or has the tools and capability to do so. Most importantly, not everyone is capable of handling the problems that may arise when it doesn't work. The reality is that for a lot of shooters, buying a rifle is the better option. Not to mention the fact that a factory gun comes with a warranty.

I did a lot of research before buying my S&W. I've heard lots of folks saying that Colt is better. I've never heard anyone able to tell me why.

Well said CraigC on the Colt vs S&W. I too bought a S&W over a Colt. Colt has a mystic being one of the first players in the game w/ their military contracts, but the Smith, IMHO, is just as good. I had a Colt years ago and I can see no difference in them. They both go bang when I pull the trigger, they both hit the target and, while I liked the Colt (very early 80's) slick side and before they even had a shell casing deflector, I think the Smith is every bit the rifle.
I have handled some of the new Colt's and there is some slop where the upper and lower meets. I hate to spend $1000 on any AR and then turn around and have to buy a rubber insert to tighten thing up.
I have no intention of starting a 'Flame' on the merits of S&W AR's vs Colt AR's as this is just MY opinion.
My S&W is a fine rifle for my intented purpose. I will probably never see anything more violent than a bleeding Zombie target. LOL

+1

I really think you need to jump at least a couple hundred dollars to get a gun that is definitively better than the M&P Sport.

Although the S&W's are nice, I think most AR people will say that the best under 1k is colt 6920 and I would agree. Now if you want to say around $800 I'd say Spikes. If you want to say for $600 I'd say M&P sport. All depends on price point.

Where are people finding Colts for under $1,000? I dont care for the M&P sport but do like and own a different M&P model. For under a grand they are all pretty close to the same, you might find one with a 1&7 barrel that everyone is crazy about but the 1&9 barrels shoot just fine. People get too carried away :banghead:

The neat thing about the Sport is that working from a $1k budget the $600 price point leaves nearly enough cash left over to pick up a 10 pack of D&H Mags from DSGArms, a VCAS sling, and a 1k rounds of decent ammo.

Although the S&W's are nice, I think most AR people will say that the best under 1k is colt 6920 and I would agree.
Not to be argumentative, but I see this repeated over and over again with no real explination. Not saying it isn't true, but can someone provide some specific examples of why the 6920 is better than the Sport, without using the words "dust cover", "forward assist" or "chrome lined barrel"? :scrutiny:
