CY - appreciate the reply, but I pocket carry every day in a Nemesis. I was just considering IWB at about 2 o'clock (appendix carry) as an alternative with some pants.

Also - I now see your .38+P or .357 question above. I think you are probably in the majority with +Ps. Second place (and what I carry) is probably the .357s made by Speer especially for short barrels. If you search the thread for SBGD you'll find a discussion, I'm sure.

Edit - might be GDSB - I can't remember the popular short-hand. It's Speer Gold Dot for Short Barrels.

Anybody had any problems with tarnishing of the finish on the cylinder of their M&P from a nemesis holster? Mine developed some nasty rust-colored spots on the fluting and then the whole cylinder itself. S&W repaired it (quickly and efficiently), but I'm a little spooked now on the nemesis/M&P340 combination. Any thoughts?

Pocket holster. I only use a Mika Roundcut. No tarnish, no finish blem issues.
The DLC seems to get somewhat shiny at the wear points.

I have a little wear on the left rear backstrap at the corner, using the Nemesis. I have a mikea but it's too nice to beat up, so I just use it for dress. It seems to make the 340 sit a little higher in the pocket and that would be with the CT's. Otherwise no problems.

On another note, has anyone had retention problem with the leather Blackhawk? I seem to have a problem keeping the little revolver in place using this holster when doing a lot of bending activity. Once I dumped it into the drink when exploring a shallow stream. I tried it the other day when cutting firewood and noticed that the 340 was beginning to creep out of the holster. Any similar problems out there??

I carry Buffalo Bore 125 +P's in my 340 PD.
Because it's jacketed, there are no lead issues (bullet pull).
I tried GDSB 357's and DPX 357's when I first got the gun,
but decided that fast follow up shots were more important
at a distance of 8 feet or closer, which is where I believe
trouble would happen, than a little more power with slower recovery time.
I feel very comfortable with a 125 grain bullet at 1100 fps.
Prior to Buffalo Bore, I carried Corbon DPX 38 +P's.

I just got 5 boxes of the 135 Gold Dot for SB's from ATG.

Question:

i've been reading recently about bullet-nose separation issues with the .357 GD, since it uses the same .38 bullet which was designed for slower velocities. Take this review, from midway for example:

Gold Dot Review

Fired a fair amount of this through a Smith 340PD used for back up/concealed carry when I was looking for a good .357 load. I would recommend it only for experienced shooters committed to training with their gun if it's going to be used in this weapon. Produces excellent accuracy and very little flash. I called Speer to ask about this load compared with the .38 +P SB load. It does use the same bullet, but they said when overdriven as it is in this round, the 135GD nose will break off and the remaining shank will continue to penetrate since it's bonded. Should be great for carry, the only down side in this gun being extra recoil and long cases that might not eject reliably under stress.

For this reason I'm thinking of switch to Cor-Bon 125gr DPX's, although I'd like to see a definitive test in blastics gel with these gold dots. The DPX's are damn expensive.

I have some .357 SGDFSB but I now have them in with the 686 3 inch supply.
For the 340 I put .357 in the "nice to be able to use if necessary" category. Makes for a more versatile revolver.

Otherwise I keep mine loaded with the .38sp Plus P and have recently purchased a couple boxes of the DPX and yes it is overly expensive.

I think I have enough .38 spl JHP in stock for awhile. I need some range stuff though.

New M&P360 model! No ILS(?), 3" barrel--

They've bumped the price, of course--for this 360 version, it's now the same as the M&P 340. They've come a long way from selling that 360 frame with a 38 Special carbon steel cylinder for $409.00 at Bud's some sixteen months ago.

As for that lock / no lock configuration--my speculation is that S&W is moving away from the lock, mostly by introducing a no-lock frame on a "premium" product, such as a scandium 38/357 configuration. I'll bet the Night Guard series was a test marketing, and along will come the Night Guard Pro series, with no locks, a better trigger, relief for moonclips, etc.

Now, if I can get that 3" barrel fit to a Centennial (DAO) frame and have a M&P340-3", I'll be happy. One each, for pocket and for belt / underarm carry.

Added on edit: heh, see DAdams post below--I think, or wish, it doesn't have the ILS.

I really really want to get one of these- the recent re-release of the no lock 642 and 442 is holding me back hoping that a no lock 340 is on the horizon.

Is it just me or does it seem sort of ridiculous to make an ultra light weight gun using exotic alloys just to save a few grams and then throw in the extra hardware of a safety lock???

That said I really realy want this gun.

Call S&W Customer Service and see what they say. That way you won't be keeping yourself in suspence. If the lock was taken out instead of weighing
13.3 ounces it would weigh 13.1??

I don't care for the lock from an aesthetic standpoint, but it can barely be seen on a 340. More a sore thumb on stainless models. If I were keeping one around the house and had kids or grandkids I might actually like it, but then I would probably get a handgun safe and tuck it away.

It's an awesome snub I'm going on 3 years and am still glad I bought mine. They are fun to get good with. Not like some 6 inch 686; why heck anyone can hit the broad side of a barn with one of those.

What is that Nike says......Just Do It. Lifes too short to drink crummy coffee, cheap beer or go without a M&P 340.

I fired one with +P round

Speer 135 grain and that was enough one shot....
You know its going to hurt when you pull the trigger and you flinch....I cant
hit a Tank at 10 ft with this thing ....TO DANG LIGHT!
I will take my SP101 anyday of week or model 36....maybe if it shot .22lr's?
and my friend that bought it is taking it to a gun show to try and trade for
for Ruger SP

I too have the 340 PD. I got it in late October. It was on order for nearly 6 months at the gun shop near me. I kept calling and they'd say "still waiting on S&W to ship them to us". I got tired of waiting and found it at another but ended up paying top dollar for it $950. Ouch.
But I love the gun. Its my first cc piece and I'm a big Ruger single action fan from birth.
I was at the gun shop to pick it up that day and the owner said "you know the saying on the street with these guns is right... you run into a mob in the back alley and instead of shooting him, you threaten to make him fire it".. ha ha, I thought. Went right home and loaded it up with some fat and happy .357 reloads to get the full experience from the first cylinder full. It was fine. It was no where near the punishment I was expecting.
I loaded a few more cylinders and let them rip. Then put in some .38s and proceeded to shoot some decent groups. I wasn't happy with the trigger so for the next few weeks after that, I'd sit in front of the tv and just keep dry firing it.
Over the coarse of a couple weeks I probably dry fired it 2 or 3000 times. The trigger is much better now. No one told me though, how to pull it back almost all the way, just before it breaks, and then aim. I had to figure that one out myself. I'm very happy with it and it goes wherever I go, complete with brand new cc permit. Its my first S&W and I am very pleased.

I'd like to get a belt clip holster for it in leather. Any suggestions?

Christmas Gift

For Christmas 2007, my daughter ( a lovely and well brought up child ) surprised me with an S&W 340PD HIVIZ revolver. The next day, I diplomatically got her to exchange it at her dealer for a 340 M&P. I did not care for the HIVIZ sight and I wanted the omnivorous stainless cylinder. The gun has worked perfectly since then and has been fired about 2,000 rounds. The gun is usually fired and carried with Speer .38 Special +P 125 gr. JHP ammo. I also shot a couple of boxes of Remington .357 Magnum 110 gr. JHP which were unpleasant and a few Federal .357 Magnum 125 gr. JHP which were brutal. The 340 M&P has replaced my 640-1 as my CCW.

I'm slowly working my way to the end of this thread but have several pages to go. Wanted to jump to the end and share this. It is my new scandium. The box label serial number and the weapon's serial number match. The box is marked M&P 360 and the gun is stamped MP360.

However, I can't find anywhere to put the hammer...!!!

I've sent the factory a letter asking if it was supposed to be built as a 340 and got stamped wrong or is it a 360 that was built wrong. Since the box also says 360 I'm bettin' that it was serialized as a 360 and that's what the work order called for...

I’m new here (I guess you guys already figured that one) but have been lurking for a while now..

I own & presently carry a S&W 442 & after much work & practice can actually hit something with it..

I have kind of taken a liking to the present 340 MP (especially the front sight) that I have seen on the one I handled.. My old eyes need a decent sight picture..

So my question to the 340 group is: are there any different sights available at time of ordering? I deal with an older gentleman that has an FFL & while he is a good friend & gives me a good deal he basically just orders what I want & has no real knowledge of the current sight options..

Is there only one front sight across the board on the 340 MP or do I have options & if so what options are available & if so what are they called?

Wolfman Bill thanks for stopping in and if you like your 442 I suspect trimming a couple ounces off and adding the XS Standard Dot Tritium with ramp sight shall prove helpful developing a faster and easier attainable sight picture than a blade. The light pipe or fiber is ok during the day, but of course is no help in no or minimal light conditions, although again superior to the blade type.

Crimson Trace laser grips don't hurt either. But that's a topic unto itself.
Unless you want yours with Factory Logos. Then you are better ordering it that way.

To my knowledge (I haven't been to the S&w sight in a few days ) The only sight available for a M&P 340 is the XS Standard Dot. XS makes two, the Standard and Big Dot, the M&P has the standard Dot. The sight contains a Tritium Vial which provides the white ring in daylight and greenish white glow at night. Tritium's half life is about 10 years on the average. Since the sight is pinned someday it will have to be and can be readily replaced.

Fire away. No snapcaps required. This is true of 642-2, 442-2, and 340 M&Ps for certain. I called S&W Customer Service a few years back and got this straight from them. BTW if you see sparks flying, don't be alarmed. That seems to happen in about 10% of the Centennials. Metal to metal contact.

Omnivorous Stainless Cylinder Well put and I wasn't thrilled with the HIVIZ sites either.

Please Help Compare Recoil Between 360 M&P and Taurus 605 Steel

Hello everyone...hope you can give me some feedback. I'm 12 hours away from picking up a S&W 360 M&P. I typically CCW a Taurus 605 (24 oz.) and am comfortable with shooting 38 +P and 357 110 gr. from it. I am hoping to have the 360 M&P as an extra backup gun for warmer CA weather and so my wife (who's a novice) can utilize a weapon when we travel together.

My question concerns recoil comparison between the two. If I were to only use standard 38 Spls in the 360 M&P, what would the recoil resemble most in the Taurus 605--would it be the same as shooting 38 +Ps or closer to the 357 110 gr.?

Time is of the essence and I would really appreciate guidance because I wouldn't want to hand a canon to my inexperienced wife.

I got a reply from the factory today. They said their systems showed the revolver was intended to be built as a 360 and they have no idea how a 340 frame would have been used during the manufacturing process. So I guess technically I have a 360 that was built incorrectly.... But it will always be a 340 to me...

I know it's not that uncommon for one to get mis-marked....
