Don't forget the CT allen wrench just in case the laser needs a tweak.

Oh and BTW, when cleaning don't get cleaning fluids on the lens, cover with tape or remove the grip entirely. Take it from a man with experience.....it takes a long time to get it clean and looking right again. :banghead: :fire: :cuss:

Take all three rounds .38spl, Plus P and .357. Work your way up. Keep your grip high.

Practice with and w/o the laser. I found it distracting at first.

DAdams, thanks for all the advice so far. I (and many others, I'm sure) appreciate it. I see that you split time between FL and TN. Where in FL? I'm on the Gulf Coast myself, in Fort Walton Beach.

I need to change my profile since we sold our house in FL last November.
We were going back and forth and decided to opt out of FL due to high costs and too darned crowded. We were there 20 years and it was time for a change. It was good for the first 15 years. We just didn't need the infastructure (schools) anymore. Son grown-up and moved on...to East TN, (but not with us). :D

We were in N. Pinellas, Palm Harbor, near Tarpon Springs.

Definitely like East TN much better than FL. We still get to FL occassionally business and some pleasure. Likely will spend a month a year on the East side in a year or two.

Took my 340 to the range today. Made sure to bring along a box of .357 Magnums. Dude... :D

I'll post a full range report later, as I fired all four of my handguns today. Right now it's time to hit the gym...I hope my hands aren't too sore to hold the barbell :)
 
First of all, I would like to thank everyone who posted information due to it has been very helpful. I am new to this site and am also new to modern S&W revolvers. I have always been an "old school" type of person, a thick headed former jar head who has been carrying a Colt Lightweight Commander for many years as my self defense weapon on and off duty as a corrections internal affairs investigator. Several months ago, I came to the realization that I am getting too old for such a big handgun and gave up my commander and began carrying my old trusty S&W Model 60. I then decided to go modern and join the 340 M&P CT club. I was very inmpressed with the size and weight of this weapon and liked it very much until I took it to the range. After shooting 125 rounds, I experienced six times when the revolver would not fire. Like a few other people reported on this site in the past, I was able to pull the trigger, the cyclinder rotated, but the weapon would not fire. Now I have an E-mail pending with S&W customer service and I am back to carrying my trusty Model 60 again. This is very frustrating, but am hopeful that S&W will come through for me like other people who had similar problems. The biggest issue I will have in the future will be if I will be able to have confidence in this new fangled gadget again. After such an experience, can one bet their life on it?

I had to send a brand new 642-2 in for repair after 50 some odd rounds a few years back. They made it as easy as possible covering shipping both ways and I think I had it back in two weeks. Imagine this, I was an inexperienced handgun owner and Ironically enough, I bought the "reliable revolver" to use while my brand new Kahr PM9 was in the shop after 150 round of shortcomings!!

Ultimately I got both back and they have both been fine since.

The biggest issue I will have in the future will be if I will be able to have confidence in this new fangled gadget again

Time will tell, I think you will. Stick with it and I trust you will find it's worth it.

It is indeed disheartening but these things happen. Give S&W a chance to redeem themselves and let us know how things turn out.

Thank you Dennis, I will hang tough. Smith & Wesson sent me the FedEx labels today, so I will be shipping it back in the near future. I will let you know how things go.

Well, you've finally talked me into it. And by "you" I mean my back. :D Just sold the .45 and I'll be picking up an M&P 340 as soon as I find one for a good price. Although my cheap nature wants to buy used whenever possible, I may need to succumb and go retail as I'll have no carry gun once the Springy ships. :eek:

Anything changed in the world of retail 340 since I was last on this thread? I see Bud's only has the CT version right now, which is sad as I want the non-laser version and Bud's is generally the best prices.
 
I'm seriously considering taking the money out of savings to snatch that up before they go out of stock, and just back filling the account when the payment for the gun I sold arrives. Terrible accounting practice I know, but I'll kick myself if I miss that deal. Stupid self control, it's no fun at all. :)

Now, I'm still working my way up through this thread as I didn't make it all the way through last time I tried to read it all ;) but I have a few questions. Please forgive me if they've already been asked and answered.

I want to put on a fuller sized (ie all 4 fingers on) grip. Are the Hogue Monogrips still king of that particular hill, or has a challenger appeared? Anyone have wood stocks on their 340, like the Secret Service boot grips from Eagle?

I'm also planning on getting a Mika pocket holster to try out pocket carry. However, if that doesn't work (or I just want alternatives) I'm also looking at IWB cross draws. Anyone tried Mika's IWB? Any thoughts on good cross draw rigs for the lil J? I just finished Ed Lovette's The Snubby Revolver (although apparently an older edition) and I think he makes some good points about the advantages of cross draw.
 
The Hogue Monogrip still seems to rule the roost, thought the CT 305 is another popular model. The Monogrip is WAY cheaper though, so that would likely be a good place to start. Wood grips would seem like a better option for snag-free draw and carry, but I'd be willing to bet that anyone with wood grips on a 340 shoots it once a year, whether they want to or not.

Were it me in your place, I'd get wood grips and a Monogrip. Carry with the wood, practice with the Hogue. When you need it, you won't care/notice that the wood grip was there in the first place.

Can't speak to IWB carry...I have an Uncle Mike's pocket holster, and I don't really carry that much. It rides in the center console a lot.

shootersjax and Bud's at any given time seem to have the best prices/availability regarding the 340. As you read through you will find the name come up, purchases made and apparently no problems.

I really liked the Hogue Monogrips but they were too much grip for pocket carry. They were great for practice and for OWB/IWB you may find them fine.

Some have indicated the Hogue Bantams are a good compromise between the standard boot grip and the Monos as they have a modified full grip but smaller than the Monos. At around $20 per set I guess I would try both. I just can't get behind wood grips. They look pretty, but I don't buy the slow from the pocket argument as when in reality you grip the revolver in the pocket, the only thing coming in contact with the cloth of the pants is your hand. What I do like is some padding and a more "grippy" material.

After 2.5 years I still have the CT 405s on mine. Still carry it in the Mika Roundcut. It comes in and out of the holster once per day for inspection and still looks great and shoots well. I haven't seen fit to change from the SGDFSB 135 gr plus P, but did buy a box of Hornady CD 110 gr Plus P I am going to put up against the GD. I am also going to refresh my memory with a few rounds of COR BON DPX 110 Plus P to round out the PD refresher course.
That is after a few Remington UMC standard .38 spl for warm up.

Me, I'd buy the 340 before someone sneaks a VAT tax in on us next week. :D
 
Im new here and just had a 340SC stolen from my vehicle. Im seriously considering replacing it with an M&P340 or 340PD. Im not sure if I will take the plunge on the .357 since I was carrying +P .38 in my SC, which was actually lighter than the PD. It kills me that it was stolen but oh well, learning opportunity.

I found shooting full house .357 to be wholly unpleasant with my 340 SC. Im not overly recoil sensitive. I have a 4.75 inch Freedom Arms 454, a .500 linebaugh and a .475 linebaugh and a .500 S&W 4 inch. I would classify the little 340 SC to be on par with my .500 S&W as far as punishment when using full house loads (in both). Im carring an LCP for my daily carry and its makes me feel like Im hunting bear with a switch! I need to get my J Frame back!

Indeed, its difficult to live w/o a J frame. The M&P is a great combo of parts and pieces from S&Ws expertise. If they did a PD with the XS sights I might be tempted, just for the lighter weight. I don't bother much with .357, but it is nice to know you can if you desire.
 
jeez akadave, it is truly tragic to have such a fine firearm stolen. I hope you get a replacement and that your other pistol is recoverd.

It's a fun game to fire doubletap +p 125gr's from the scandium frame pistols with the stock grips. It usually literally blisters + cuts people's hands in less than 20 rounds.

On the other hand, most people think .357 mag is like the federal .357 personal defense rounds - and those are only ~1050fps from a snub. Weak. doubletap's 38+P beat those. Something in between is just about perfect, and even the 38+P 1100fps 125gr is no slouch.
 
Interesting. Ordered a set of Hogue Bantams and Monogrips. 340's are round butt, right? I'm trying to decide between the two versions of Pachmayr Compacs: the regular and the "Pro" version. Any thoughts on the difference between the two?
 
Yeah, I surely didnt enjoy the .357 loads on my ol 340SC. Im not recoil sensitive but Ive always hated rubber grips on hard kicking revolvers but in this case it may be necessary.

I picked up an M&P 340 yesterday and Im anxious to get it to the range to break it in a bit. I dont feel comfortable toting an unfired weapon.

My impression then is as I have portrayed the two above but I would down load the catalog and check my work.
Your choice based on the description.

I had Pachmayrs that came on a 686 and put on a set of Mongrips they are larger and "grippier". I like them but I never carry the 686.

Best 340 price and available grips for it?

Guys, what's the best price online for the 340? With and without the Crimson Trace grip please.

Also, I need a little longer grip for it to fit me well. Are there any good grips available for it?

Not too thick as I have short hands.

I seem to remember a Hogue grip or something on the one I tried in a store fitting me pretty well but not sure. It's been awhile ago.

On the grips, when you reply, if you have a link to any pics it would be great so I can get an idea of what they look like.

I just looked at S&W's site and realized that maybe this was the one I was interested in. It has been awhile and I've looked at both.

I received my permit to carry about a year ago and have since been carrying, or more often than not, making excuses not to carry my only firearm--a stainless steel Springfield 1911. For a few months now I have been in the market for a pocket revolver, the search has lead me to a 340M&P (Thanks in part to this thread!). Now its time for me to bite the bullet and make the purchase. I would like a to get the crimson trace LG-405 laser grip as well--I think laser grips can be an invaluable asset on a personal defense weapon.

At any rate, after shopping around my area I have found all the prices to be significantly higher than those at Bills Gun Shop (online) or Shooters (online). I have two questions. I have never purchased a firearm online before--what do I need to know? Anything in particular to be aware of? Also do you guys recommend going with a model all ready equipped with the laser grips, or buying them separately? It seems to be a hair cheaper (at least from what I can find) to buy separately but I expect the prices to even out with shipping. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

If your considering the laser, I would recommend it. I have had the chance to do some training with them and they can be a huge asset in a personal defense situation. Also it seems like you may be confusing HIVIZ sights and tritium sights. The 340M&P has tritium sights which glow continuously at night. The 340PD has HIVIZ sights with are fiber-optic and simply gather available light (they do not create light as tritium sights do) so HIVIZ sights are great during they day or when there is enough ambient light to be picked up, but at night they are like any other sight.

From the training I have conducted I much prefer the ability to sight in at night were it ever necessary, hence one of the reasons why I find the 340M&P to be a favorable configuration of a revolver.

Well I don't know if that answered your questions or not, again I am not an expert on any of this stuff.
