Took the ne M&P 40 out to the range today and put about 250 rounds through it. The pistol has great feel and a super smooth trigger. It is very accurate. It took me a bit to get me used to it since it was so different from my old pistol. Gun shot great with no failures per say. However, it has developed a problem. About one in 20 times when i load the magazine with the the slide locked back, the slide slams forward on its own chambering a round. Anybody have any ideas what might be causing this. Anybody had this problem? I am taking it back to the store on Tuesday and having the gunsmith take a look at it and if need be send it off to Smith & Wesson. The last thing that happened was on the very last of 250 rounds when the magazine was empty the slide did not lock back. I am a little frustrated here since I just bought a $500 firearm to have these problems right out of the box. Especially since I had heard such great things about them.

The slide coming forward when seating the mag is common, it may be a feature or a bug. Just keep your finger off of the trigger.

The empty mag not holding the slide open would most likely that the gun wants to be cleaned well and lubed. Or weak ammo, wrist, concentration.

I doubt there's anything wrong with your gun.

Where was your thumb when the slide failed to lock back? About 90% of those failures are induced by the shooter.

The slide going home during loading is common and happens with just about every model of autoloader. Some are more prone to it than others and many people consider it a desireable feature (saves time on the reload).

Go ahead and have the store look at it, but what you've described sounds pretty typical for a new semi-auto owner.

Well I am going to have the store gunsmith look at it and if they say the same thing then I wont worry about it. The slide not locking back on the last round could have been a one time fluke or a mistake on my part but either way I will continue to shoot it until it happens again. If it never happens again then I have no problem.

Perfectly normal. You can save yourself a trip in that regards. It's not the only gun that does it. Don't rely on it as a "feature", but it's not necessarily a bug.

definitely normal.

my slide didn't lock back once, but after i shot some more ammo through it, it broke in a little better and didn't do it again.

the 24/7 pro's slide slams shut when you really use force in engaging the magazine

That seems to be the only time it happens. I cleaned a lubed the gun very well last night and did 100 normal magazine reloads . After every five or ten I made sure to reset the slide incase the loading the magazine was causing it to loosen. It also only does it when there are rounds loaded in the magazine. So i made sure they were not working their way out every time I loaded the magazine. I got to 95 and decided to really slam the last 5 home hard and on the 99th one it slammed forward. I also noticed I was resting my trigger finger up by the ambidextrious (sp?) slide release so that could have been causing it as well. So all in all I'm not too worried about it. I will put a few hundred more rounds through it and see what happens. If thats the only that happens then I'm golden.

The reason that it only happens with a loaded magazine is because of the shallow slide stop notch on the M&P. When you insert a loaded mag the top round is pushed down by the bottom of the slide. This is so the slide can strip the top round. In turn, the top round is actually forcing the slide up a tiny bit and that causes the slide stop to lose contact with the slide. When this happens the slidestop is designed to drop. (Same thing as using the slingshot method to chamber a round.)

Okay, well then it sounds like I dont have a problem then. Thanks for the input guys. I was getting a little nervous there.
