My M1 carbine with some combat gear. All WW2 vintage except the Ka-Bar and sheath, and the carbine’s sling. Pretty representative of the common basic loadout during island hoping. Yes I know the bayonet lug and adjustable sight are post war. Take care and God bless our veterans,

Very cool! Force of habit would have me grab my M1 carbine instead of my AR for home defense. It just "feels right" for me.
Way quieter than an unsuppressed .223 out of a 16" barrel too!

My local indoor range has seperate sections for handgun and centerfire rifles, but there is often a wait to get on a rifle lane. They let me shoot my Carbines on the pistol side and no one has ever complained.:)

Ah yes, the great M1. As a veteran, thank you for your kind words!
I went a different route…

I love my little svelte M1 carbine. A dandy little thing inside 200 yards.
Agreed that shooting it inside is so much better for everyone than my braked 338 win mag.

I need to reload something for her again soon.

during island hoping
Nice.
You do need one of these:

Goes to the center of the back of the belt. SOP varied, 3MARDiv would put the dressing pouch on the eyelets at the bottom of the JFAK.

Oh, and those khaki ones are about like hen's teeth and command $$$; the much more common OD ones can be found, with contents for around $40 (and the OD ones were issued with khaki 782 gear).

That's a really nice M1 Carbi. I was lucky enough to have one in high school way back when, but stupid enough at age 17 or 18 to sell it. It was one of the many cool guns I had at a young age. Wish I had them all back.

Nice
I've wanted to set up a belt like that for my Winchester but every time I start poking around I get overwhelmed by all the crappy and/or made in China reproductions and just give up. I would really prefer vintage but wouldn't mind repros if they were at least quality, seems so many are junk.

Excellent set of extras you have to go with the carbine!

I have one of those OD mag pouches that came with my Saginaw SG carbine when I bought it, but none of that other cool stuff. :)

Stay safe.

True enough. It takes patience, and a touch of dedication.

Decent KW era belt can be found for circa $20, $30-40 for really clean.
Belt magazine pouch will be $5-10 (about $40 if you want the 30 round version).
Dressing pouch is $5-10 (a bit more with a correct metal dressing tin inside).
Canteens have become collectable of late, so a correct KW version is going to run $25-35; another $10 with the cup.

Now the Army M-45 suspenders are in good supply, but perversely spendy, probably $30-40 for a decent set that fits.
USMC suspenders are less common, but also less expensive--$10-20.

Best way is like the Johnny Cash song--one part at a time. Slower, but more sure.

Well, ok, so, I can't find any of my Carbine belt photos. I should have three--a 1945 version, a 1951 version, and a 1966 version. Danged if I can find the photos. Sigh.

As a Kid I can remember going to REAL Army Navy surplus stores near NYC, and one could buy all that gear plus many, many others things. We had the belts pouches, helmets (inner and outer), Radios etc etc, Plus there was BIG stuff, tents, packs, mess kits,

Anyone know a good online surplus store? I’d love to pick up some items like this
That's a tough one any more. Most of the really great ones have passed into history, and the internet has taken their place.
The best markets are in other collectors, as they have winnowed through the dross. Finding a good collector you can trust can be the real ticket.

I was just remembering the sweet IMI carbine I had, when I remembered that I do still have a Universal. Not a "real" M1 Carbine, but close enough, in the right light...

When the CMP announced they were going to sell carbines a few years ago, I knew I had to get my CMP paperwork ready, and buy one.
One of my best days ever was driving to CMP North store, and picking out my Carbine. Got an early Inland in an Rockola I-cut stock…
It shoots pretty well, too. Target is 15rds, standing, offhand at 100yds. A couple years after I got, CMP notified me they had Norwegian army copies of the bayonet for $25. The sheath was my Dad’s in WWII…he carried a combat knife in it in France and Germany. CMP later notified me that they had magazines for, I think, $50/10.

Yay! Carbine!

since I recently wrote my main Carbine stories I will not.

One of my favorite targets for my carbine as a kid was a 20 pound empty and valveless LP gas canister. from 25 to 50 yards away FMJ drilled cleanly through both sides. The Soft points drilled through the front and most punched a less clean hole out the back though some just dented the back. Few boys that went shooting with me had much to say about lack of power.

when the Sun was getting low and it started to darken in the old sand pit, shooting the gas canister with FMJ produced noticeable sparks on occasion!

When I was last At Mom’s I considered going to see if the pit is still there and I might find a rotting old French Berdan primed Carbine case or two.

as a kid we found folks had fired all manner of stuff back there. For me the most interesting being a pile of steel MG links (and steel starter tab) for a Browning 1919 and a sprayed fan of .30-06 cases. I picked up anything reloadable and a couple of examples of any thing else…. but I left a lot of French Berdan Carbine brass out there.

I bought one that came into the shop about ten years back. Ugly. Oiler hole filled with plastic wood. Pistol grip moulded of same. Recoil pad. Gun was 100% Underwood. I planned on trying to dremel and chisel out the plastic and failing that have a Winchester stock. Did find a buttplate, sling and oiler for whichever way I go. It has a great bore and is a good shooter. Handier than an AR.

Handier than an AR.
Yeap, totally correct!
Much like a Mini 14 just feels handier than an AR. Shame Ruger blundered with the too small barrel diameter out of the gate. Heavy barrel Minis are very accurate.

For me it's the best rifle ever made. I have a Saginaw and an Inland. Both have slings but the only other accessory I have is a VN era bayonet. I can't tell you how pissed I am at myself for not buying the WWII bayonet the guy would have thrown in for $100.

As a Boomer I was coming of age in the days of USGI surplus stores. As Boy Scouts everything we used for camping came from surplus stores. I was in my teens 20 years after the war. That was the time wives were getting tired of looking at old war stuff and started pitching it into junk piles. Good days.
